This was a very defensive minded matchup between Scott County and Bardstown. I traveled to Bardstown High School Friday night to scout some top in-state players. This matchup including Bardstown’s star and Louisville commit, JJ Traynor. On the other side, you have Scott County’s Terrin Hamilton. Opening up the game Scott County went on a 13-5 run causing Bardstown’s Head Coach, James Brewer, to call his first timeout at the 3:11 minute mark. After 1 Quarter, Scott County was leading by two, 14-12. Bardstown was struggling to find the basket in the 2 Quarter as they only scored 8 points, making the halftime score, 30-20 Scott County. After 3 Quarters, Scott County was still in the lead 45-36. Bardstown was trying to fight their way back. They even cut it to two points with about 5 minutes to go in the 4th Quarter. But Terrin Hamilton for Scott County was just too much to handle in the 4th Quarter as he scored 10 points in the final minutes of the ball game. Scott County went on to win, 57-49.
Five Takeaways:
Terrin Hamilton (Scott County):
Standing at 6’6″ with long arms, the Senior forward for Scott County can do it all. Hamilton is very aggressive when attacking the paint. His long arms make it difficult for defenders to contest his shot. He shoots it really well from the free throw line as he made 7 of them in his 8 attempts. Hamilton ended with a game-high, 29 points. Terrin is starting off his Senior campaign with a bang. Even though we are only 2 games into the season, Hamilton is averaging 30.5 PPG. I am very excited to see what Hamilton and the rest of this Scott County team can do this season.
JJ Traynor (Bardstown):
Senior big man JJ Traynor is committed and signed to play for Chris Mack at the University of Louisville in 2020. Traynor started off this game slow as Scott County had a plan to double team him when getting the ball in the post. It worked for the 1st half as Traynor only scored 4 points. But we all know Traynor was going to get his buckets and he ended up with 17 points. Traynor is long and has a jump shot that is pretty much unguardable. He rises so high when he shoots the ball, it is impossible to contest/block. Traynor had some emphatic dunks throughout this game that left the fans saying “wow”. He has great quickness for his size also but Scott County did an excellent job defending him. Expect big things for the Louisville commit, JJ Traynor.
Scott County’s Defense:
Scott County played excellent defense in this Friday night matchup against a very talented Bardstown team. They limited Bardstown star player to just 4 points in the 1st half. They would double-team him in the post and made sure it made him uncomfortable. They communicated really well too. They would call out screens, switch on every pick, and they would trap the ball at mid-court to try and force a turnover or make Bardstown call a timeout.
Scott County’s Inside Game:
Despite only making two 3-pointers the whole game, Scott County manages to go on the road and pull out the victory. Bardstown made seven 3-pointers but it wasn’t enough. Scott County got most of their buckets inside the paint. Other than JJ Traynor, Bardstown did not really have any other inside defensive presence. Scott County took full advantage of that as they crashed the offensive glass and finished at the rim very easily. Senior Terrin Hamilton (29 points) and Junior Elias Richardson (15 points) got it going inside by attacking the rim and snagging second-chance points.
Both Benches Struggled:
So this game did not have much scoring because of stellar defense from both teams. In fact, only 8 players (4 from each team) scored in the game. And only 4 bench points were scored and that was by Bardstown senior Jase Phillips. I am sure both coaches looked at the box score after the game and realized that they need more production from the guys off the bench. Again, there was little scoring in this matchup to begin with, but Bardstown only having 4 bench points and Scott County have none, it was just crazy to me. Most interesting stat of the night.
Recap:
Leading for the entire game, Scott County manages to hold on and pull out the away victory over Bardstown. Defense was the main focus for Scott County’s big win. Scott County’s Terrin Hamilton and Bardstown’s JJ Traynor was a must-see matchup. They both performed really well. JJ Traynor struggled in the beginning but picked it up in the 2nd half. Terrin Hamilton was terrific the entire game and earned my MVP of this Friday night game in Bardstown. Both teams move to 1-1 for the season. Scott County’s next opponent will be December 10th at home against Lexington Catholic. Bardstown’s next game will be December 7th at Muhlenberg County H.S. for The First State Bank Tip Off Classic versus Bowling Green.
