Two of the best teams in the state went head-to-head Tuesday night at Male High School. The #1 Team in KY, Male, faced the #5 Team in KY, Fern Creek. Male got the best of Fern Creek in this matchup but there was a lot to takeaway from this fantastic matchup. There were a decent amount of injuries for both teams heading into this matchup. Fern Creek’s star forward Zek Montgomery is out for 2 weeks due to a high ankle sprain. Male’s star guard Howard Fleming Jr. has been out with a shoulder injury. A handful of players needed to step up due to some big time injuries. Fern Creek started out the game a little slow as they found themselves down 21-10 at the end of the 1st Quarter. At halftime, Male was still leading 38-29. Fern Creek ended the 3Q on an 11-5 run and cut the lead to 6 points heading into the 4Q. Male’s Tyren Moore was just too much to handle as the Male Bulldogs defeated the Fern Creek Tigers, 67-61.
Five Takeaways
Tyren Moore (Male)
Senior point guard Tyren Moore was on fire in this game. Tyren is committed to play for Lincoln Memorial University next season and let me tell you, they are getting a good one. Tyren won my Player of the Game as he lead all scorers with 31 points. 18 of those 31 points came from behind the arc as he hit 6 threes. The extremely talented and confident point guard had the green light the entire game. Not only can he shoot the ball but he can drive the ball really well. Tyren and the #1 Male Bulldogs are looking to have a massive year.
Jaden Rogers (Fern Creek)
Although Fern Creek did not win the game, Jaden Rogers was absolutely incredible. Evansville’s Head Coach Walter McCarty was in attendance for this game to watch Jaden. Evansville offered him a scholarship back in October to come play for the Purple Aces. Jaden is only a Junior, so I expect more offers coming his way. He led the Tigers with 26 points. He was knocking down a lot of difficult shots and launching some deep three-pointers as he nailed 3 of them. His dribbling skills was the thing that really caught my eye though. He was really smooth with the ball and always seemed under control. Very impressive showing from Jaden despite the loss.
Kaleb Glenn (Male)
Freshman star Kaleb Glenn didn’t get that many touches this game but still managed to record his 3rd double-double in 4 games. Glenn ended the game with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Coming into this game, Glenn was averaging 17.3 points and 12 rebounds. His athleticism and strength is really impressive for only being a Freshman. I think Male should have gone to him a little more than they did but Senior guard Tyren Moore was just on fire. You could tell this is not your ordinary high school Freshman. Kaleb Glenn is a star and will continue to get better. If you don’t know the name now, get familiar with it. You’ll be hearing it a lot.
CeArius Warren (Fern Creek)
Junior big man was really impressive in this game. He had to step up big time for the Tigers as Zek Montgomery was out with an injury. And that he did. He ended the game with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Coming into the game Warren was only averaging 5 points and 6.7 rebounds. He has major bounce as he threw down some sweet dunks including a couple alley-oops. He had some hecklers when he went to the free throw line but he stayed calm and knocked down 4 of his 5. His play will be massive for the Tigers as they wait for Zek to return from injury in about 2 weeks. Good performance from the athletic big man.
Injuries
Injuries were a big factor in this Tuesday night game. Fern Creek’s Junior star Zek Montgomery was out, along with Junior Caden Bradford and Sophomore Andru Markham. Some really big losses for the Tigers. Male was also missing their Senior guard Howard Fleming Jr. I would do absolutely anything for a rematch with both teams healthy. It would have been a completely different ball game. Who knows what would’ve happened but it would have been even better than it already was.
Recap
Sadly I have some bad news. These teams do not play again in the regular season. They are also not in the same region, which is a bummer. This means they won’t meet again unless they both come out of their respected regions. Like I said in the “Injuries” section, I would love a rematch with these two teams at full strength. It would be so much fun and an absolutely battle. Male moves to 3-1 in the season. At Butler will be their next game on Friday, December 13th. Fern Creek moves to 2-2 in the season. At Manual will be their next game on Friday, December 13th as well.
