Menomonee Falls has a sophomore duo of Steven Clay and Seth Trimble that is poised to dominate the Wisconsin high school basketball scene for years to come. Tosa East’s roster, on the other hand, is built around 2021 talent. Brain Parzych, John Lovelace, Alex Singleton, Marcus Mbow and Jay Hinson Jr. form the top prospects for the Red Raiders (Leon Bond too, but he graduates in 2022).
Thanks in large part to Steven Clay’s terrific late-game performance, Menomonee Falls defended its home court and got a big 62-57 win.
Here are five takeaways from the battle between GMC foes:
Steven Clay has plenty of tools to use on offense
Are we all sure that Steven Clay wasn’t made in a lab? As just a sophomore, Clay’s build is incredible. His long 6-foot-5 frame gives him a huge advantage. This is an advantage that Clay doesn’t plan on wasting. In Friday’s win, Clay provided the spark in the final minutes that gave Falls the lead for good. Clay had two steals that led to layups, plus a bucket of his own to close out the win. The small forward did a little bit of everything on offense for the Indians. He converted on mid-range jumpers, three-point attempts, and layups.
Seth Trimble is the best point guard in Wisconsin’s 2022 class
No other point guard prospect in Wisconsin’s 2022 class is on Trimble’s level. Now, that could change, but currently, there is a significant gap between Trimble and the rest of the pack. The Menomonee Falls guard passes every test. He can pass, drive, shoot, and rebound. Trimble also has ridiculous athleticism that allows him to block shots and convert on some highlight-worthy layups.
Brain Parzych is one of the best slashers in Wisconsin
Just when it looked like Menomonee Falls was going to deliver the early knock out blow, Brain Parzych took over and led the comeback charge for Tosa East. It didn’t matter who was standing in front of him, Parzych was going to drive to the rim. And when the point guard attacked the rim, things went right for his team. Parzych either finished the layup or got fouled and made his way to the free-throw line.
When Menomonee Falls puts it all together, they can compete with anyone
This Menomonee Falls team is nowhere close to being a finished product. This is a team that mostly revolves around young talent. And when your two best players are both just sophomores, a bumpy road filled with peaks and valleys can be expected. Already in this young season, Falls has had some high points (this win being one of them) and some low points. But, it is impossible to deny the fact that this squad has a lot of talent. When all that talent plays like a cohesive unit, Menomonee Falls can compete with any team in the state.
The Red Raiders need John Lovelace healthy
Specifically in the first half, the absence of John Lovelace was painfully obvious for Wauwatosa East. TE got off to an almost embarrassingly slow start on offense in the first couple minutes. Shots were not falling, and Tosa East’s offense was not in sync. The Red Raiders did pick up the slack in the second half, but, if Lovelace was able to play, then Wauwatosa East could have made this game a lot more interesting.
