Robinson dominated the first half, but Heritage Hall worked out the kinks at halftime and rallied behind Trey Alexander and team defense to improve to (2-0), defeating the Cougars 48-40. This game was truly a tale of two halves, led by the two headlining stars.
The first half:
To start the game, Robinson couldn’t be stopped. He did a spectacular job taking advantage of the Chargers off-rhythm offensive start by putting a ton of pressure on Alexander. Robinson also played extremely under control offensively as Ada’s primary ball-handler. Eight of his 13 points came in the first quarter, shooting 2-4 from three.
Meanwhile, Alexander’s first shot was a long three that didn’t draw iron. He seemed to be rushing things, instead of letting his game come to him over time like he usually does. In the latter stages of the first quarter, while Alexander’s shot still wasn’t falling he started to penetrate towards the basket more, which found him at the free-throw line frequently. He shot six free throws in the first quarter and went 4-6. Before you knew it, he had 11 points in the first quarter.
Alexander, Robinson and both teams had a slow second quarter, only scoring 13 points combined.
The second half:
Robinson went into halftime with 13 points, and due to a stifling defensive gameplan implemented by head coach Chris Hamilton, that’s what he finished the game with.
“I don’t think they did anything to stop me,” said Robinson. “I just wasn’t making shots, so I’ll have to come back next game and do better.”
Yes, Robinson wasn’t hitting shots but it’s because there was tighter defense being played on him in the second half. A lot of the looks he got in the first half weren’t available in the second.
On the other end of the floor, Alexander couldn’t miss and in the first half, Alexander scored an inefficient 15 points the hard way. In the second, Alexander was more under control and pierced through the Cougars’ defense en route to scoring 19. For the second game in a row, Alexander took over the game in the second half.
While Alexander scored 34 of his team’s 48 points, senior point guard Jack Spanier scored 8 points, all of which coming in the first half when Alexander’s shot wasn’t falling. Spanier was the quiet reason Heritage Hall kept its lead in the first half by making timely shots. He was 2-3 from three on the night and per usual, made smart decisions throughout the game and only committed one turnover.
As for Ada, Trey Havens picked up the slack by knocking down timely triples to keep Ada in contention. He finished with 15 points on 4-8 shooting from three.
