But, we have been all over the map so far and have nearing 20 games so far. Today, we have our evaluations up from the second week of the season as we look at the class of 2022 and 2023.
QuShawn Ware – 6’4 SF 2023 – Crispus Attucks (IN)
***18 points against Tri-West (IN)***
Ware is a long, lean wing who can light it up from all over the floor. We have seen him as a lights out shooter who can play mostly on the wing but also showed he can dribble in to a jumper. Knocked one down from the right elbow but also mixed in a nice little floater. He’s got a ton of offense right now, needs a little more work defensively just as every freshman in the state does. But, the upside here is sky high over the next four years.
Alex Covey – 6’6 C 2022 – Tri-West (IN)
***11 points against Crispus Attucks (IN)***
Covey is a big, bruising post who can really score around the rim. He’s just physical enough to beat up most even as just a sophomore down low. He had a bunch of points on some layups off dump offs and cuts but did really well to be physical. He’s got really solid hands and footwork so getting to his spot isn’t a problem. Isn’t super creative yet so that will be something to watch as things develop for him.
Drayvn Lawhorn-Gibbs – 5’11 PG 2023 – McCutcheon (IN)
***21 points on 6/14 shooting, 4/8 from three, 6 rebounds, 2 assists against West Lafayette (IN)***
Gibbs is a long, lanky point guard who has a motor that can just go. He’s a really good shooter, knocking down all four of his jumpers off the catch. He has a ton of speed and really does a great job handling pressure. His body is interesting as he looks like he could grow a little bit but should have a ton of length that can turn into defense down the road. Want to see a little more effectiveness in the lane as he develops but an pretty good game for a freshman all around.
Brayden Shrewsberry – 5’10 PG 2023 – West Lafayette (IN)
***6 points on 2/6 shooting, 2/5 from three against McCutcheon (IN)***
Brayden is the son of Purdue assistant coach, Micah Shrewsberry. He’s a slight lead guard who can really shoot the ball and has all the high-IQ and ball handling ability you want to see as a coaches son. He has really good vision and can kind of find his spots to dish the ball off and does it with speed and conviction, looking more like an upperclassmen at times. Good jumper that should only get better as he adds more strength. He plays so balanced I expect him to be more of a three-point threat who racks up a good assist-to-turnover ratio.
Jonah Lucas – 6’0 PG 2022 – Harrison (IN)
***4 points on 1/3 shooting against Lafayette Jeff (IN)***
Jonah is a slightly built lead guard who looks taller and a little stronger since the summer. He’s a guy that has the handles to stay on the ball and is starting to add a little shiftiness to his handles. He only scored 4 points but did look much more confident with his play. Should be in line to take more shots and be a little more aggressive offensively.
Alan Karrfalt – 5’10 PG 2022 – Covington (IN)
***13 points on 3/7 shooting, 3 assists, 5 steals against Central Catholic (IN)***
Alan is a guard that can mix it up a bit in the lane and from deep. Has a pretty solid jumper that works off the catch. Was really tough on the perimeter with his defense and it turned into 5 steals on his own. I think that was mixture of luck and matchup but he was still a big part of the pressure they were able to apply. He’s a pretty opportunistic scorer so could see his numbers fluctuate a bit based on the game but at his best, he’s a knockdown shooter if left open.
Clark Barrett – 6’5 PF 2022 – Central Catholic (IN)
***4 points on 2/5 shooting, 3 assists against Covington (IN)***
Clark is a big, thick forward who is also a State Champion quarterback so football could also be in play here. He’s got a lot of the same attributes of his older brother with his high IQ and passing ability. Did look to shoot a bit but he’s not got his touch on him right now. Was really good when he gets touches on the low block. Has some real strength and uses that pretty well. Will be interesting to see him when he is in different shape than now because he’s clearly in football mode still.
Clayton Bridwell – 5’10 PG 2022 – Twin Lakes (IN)
***8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists against Benton Central (IN)***
Clayton is a solid lead guard who looks taller and a little more filled out on the frame. He’s still on the smaller end right now but physically looks like he can impact things much more. Was really aggressive on the defensive end where he created a good handful of turnovers by getting in the passing lanes.
Dawson Brock – 6’1 SG 2023 – Benton Central (IN)
***3 points on 1/2 shooting against Twin Lakes (IN)***
Dawson is a tall guard who will have his time but when he got chances he took advantage of them. Looks like he is going to be a pretty good shooter, showing it at the free throw line and from distance. Has more size than his older brother already and could get a tick taller but pretty solid for an off-guard. A little more of a catch-and-shoot guy right now but should develop over time.
Kamari Slaughter – 6’2 SG 2023 – Portage (IN)
***6 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists against Munster (IN)***
Kamari is a young prospect but looks advanced in his body and he’s got a lot more he can show. He was far more selective in his driving than in our PHI Freshman Showcase. He did look to shoot but the ball comes out hard and is a little too long right now. Needs to shorten it and get his hands up a bit more but should come with time. Thought he was pretty good playing on the ball and if he can maintain some of these numbers, will be something to watch positionally down the road.
