Leading with a balanced offensive attack and aggressive defense, Coeur d’Alene ended up beating Rogers 61-37. Here are the notable prospects from Friday night’s match-up:
Luke McLaughlin 2021, 6’2” Guard CHS
Luke operated throughout the game as the primary ball-handler for Coeur d’Alene High School. McLaughlin showed that he was an above average ball-handler with good speed and elite strength. Good luck to the opponent who tries to push him around on the court. Luke is an attacking guard who can use his excellent post footwork against smaller defenders. He had an smooth Kevin McHale style up-and-under post play. Around the basket, he has the ability to read the defense, get them off-balance, and then make great decisions with the ball. His great physicality allows him to finish through contact with ease. On defense, he can lock-down an opposing wing with his footwork and physical style. Through the course of this year, I believe that no one in Idaho will outwork Luke on the court. There might be players who work just as hard as he does, but he will not be outworked.
Evan Nomee 2020, 6’5” Wing Rogers
Evan is a volume score. He has NBA 3-point range. A three-year starter for Rogers,
Evan Nomee shoots over Alex KarnsNomee possess good height that allows him to get his shot off. He was able to use the threat of his range to get defenders off-balance and had a nice dribble pull-up. Evan was the best scorer for the Pirates, and with a lack of other scorers, CHS was able to lock-in on Nomee. Nomee was still able to get to his spot and get his shot off. On defense, Nomee was tasked with guarding the post players for CHS. In the second half, Evan seemed to wake up on defense. He had multiple blocks and steals as the defense of Rogers was in comeback mode through the entirety of the second half. Nomee carries himself with swagger. For non-D1 collegiate programs who want a volume wing score with deep range who would be a guy to bring off the bench as an offensive spark-plug, you found your player in Nomee.
Cameron Cope 2022, 6’4” Post CHS
Cope is a young post player who is still developing his skill set. In the first half, Cope had a big steal that led to a monster two-hand slam that was also an and-one. Long and incredibly athletic, Cope had multiple rebounds that would remind you of a young Detroit Pistons Dennis Rodman, chasing after boards and tipping them to himself multiple times. He will need to work on his offensive play, but on defense, he is already a force. Only a sophomore, by this time next year, any list of the top post players in Idaho will include Cope.
Torrey Daniels 2020, 6’1” Guard Rogers
The second best player for Rogers, Daniels was the only other consistent score option. He is an aggressive guard who can get to the basket. Daniels will need to refine his ability to finish around the hoop; however, athletically, he can get to the hoop. Defensively, he can hold his own against opposing guards. Daniels has the ability to play guard at an NAIA program.
Alex Karns 2021, 6’3” Wing/Post CHS
I asked a former assistant coach in the area to attend this game with me and give me his thoughts on some of the local talent. Of all of the players on the court, his favorite was Alex Karns. What stood out him was the versatility that Karns showed. Defensively, Karns was able to use his length to put pressure on Nomee. On offense, he was able to exploit his length and athleticism to get good looks at the rim.
Mayson Whittaker 2020, 5’9” Guard CHS
The senior guard for Coeur d’Alene was the best 3-point shooter on the court for CHS. While undersized, he has the build of football player. He uses his strength to be a pest to opposing ball-handlers the entire 94 foot length of the court. With his big game experience, defensive tenacity, and 3-point consistency, there should be a place for Whittaker at the next level.
Devon Johnson 2020, 6’1” Guard CHS
Nursing a knee injury, the Vikings of Coeur d’Alene are anxiously waiting the return of one of their senior leaders. In football terms, he is considered week-to-week. Johnson should be primed for a big final year at CHS.
