Teams across the state are tipping off with the hope of winning the Tournament of Champions, New Jersey’s biggest prize in high school basketball. The start of the new season means that the rankings have been changed. The new rankings have seen prospects shoot up the board, while others are new additions to the list. Here are the top risers in the 2020 class.
Jamir Watkins, 6’7 SF Trenton Catholic
The VCU commit had an impressive fall league as he looks to carry the Iron Mikes in Non-Public B South. Watkins went toe-to-toe with Kentucky commit Lance Ware and outplayed him over the course of the game. He can make defenses pay with his perimeter shooting, but his strength is getting to the basket. Watkins uses his strong 6’7 frame to finish through contact around the basket. He is one of the top players in New Jersey and could make his way into the top five with a strong showing early in the season.
Gianmarco Arletti, 6’6 SF Holy Cross Prep
The Italian native may not be that well-known, but he is one of the top players in South Jersey. The Delaware commit is lights out from behind the arc and is capable of getting hot in a hurry. Arletti eclipsed the 20-point mark on nine occasions last season, including a 35-point outburst against Overbrook. He is not just a scorer as the Italian is a good rebounder and a solid perimeter defender. Arletti flew under the radar for most of last season and should open some eyes in his final varsity season.
Sean Dillon, 5’10 PG New Providence
The Pioneers had their best season in program history last year behind Dillon’s play at point guard. The Seton Hill commit led the state in assists as a junior and should do it again as a senior. Dillon always has his head up and knows how to find the open man. He is also a solid three-pointer shooter and is not afraid of taking the last-second shot to win the game. Dillon is one of the top point guards in New Jersey and is looking to lead New Providence back to the Tournament of Champions in 2019-20.
Danny Oravbiere, 6’6 PF Payne Tech
Oravbiere may not be the biggest power forward in New Jersey, but he never takes a play off on both ends. The 6’6 power forward is a rugged interior presence that knows how to grab rebounds against much larger opponents. Oravbiere uses his positional awareness to block shots on the defensive end and gain position down low on the block. He has a soft touch around the basket and has a nice-looking jump shot. Oravbiere is a high-energy forward that will help Payne Tech have a good 2019-20 season.
Jordan Martin, 6’2 PG Bordentown
Martin is one of the most underrated guards in New Jersey. He is a dangerous scorer who can torch defenses from all three levels. Martin is a crafty finisher around the basket as he routinely makes circus layups in traffic. The 6’2 guard has exceptional handles and is capable of running the offense to perfection. Martin has been flying under the radar for a long time and is finally ready to emerge as a star in his senior season.
