ICYMI: City of Palms Classic (Day 1 Standouts)
Here is a look at part one of the Thursday standouts list.
Cam’Ron Fletcher & Kobe Clark (Vashon)
The combination of 2020 forwards Cam’Ron Fletcher and Kobe Clark bounced back together on Thursday after a slow showing the day prior. The two managed 36 points and 23 rebounds together, both recording double doubles. The 6’8″ Fletcher (Kentucky commit) was making shots and taking better ones at that while finishing with 21 points and 10 rebounds. The 6’7″ Kobe Clark was vocal, fighting on the boards for tip-ins and helping his team all game long with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
DJ Steward (Whitney Young)
2020 6’4″ Duke commit DJ Steward is a pure scorer. Sitting out the entire fourth quarter with his team in command, Steward totaled 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 4-of-5 from deep. He impressed me with his speed, long arms and pure athleticism. He plays downhill and always is looking to battle inside. He fell hard after getting blocked in the second quarter but played through the pain much like most Chicago area players do. Steward says he is looking forward to the second round matchup against likely opponent Montverde.
Jalen Duren, Justice Williams & Lynn Greer (Roman Catholic)
The trio of 2022 forward Jalen Duren, 2022 guard Justice Williams and 2020 guard Lynn Greer all reached double digits in a blowout win over Marshall County. The 6’10” Duren is a beast on the boards with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the first half to end with 19 points and 18 rebounds in total. Williams, a 6’4″ guard was shooting it well with 16 points while Greer was active on the attack with 11 points.
Kennedy Chandler & Marcellus Brigham (Briarcrest Christian)
A Confident finisher, who is blazing quick and thrives when he fights through contact, 2021 6’1″ guard Kennedy Chandler put together another strong outing with 28 points, six rebound and four assists. He shot 10-of-14 from the field. Chandler is simply smooth in transition. As for 6’6″ forward Marcellus Brigham, he was hitting mid-range jumpers with guys in his face. He finished with 14 points and nine rebounds in this one.
Marquel Bryant & Jason Jackson (Riverview)
It wasn’t Riverview’s day in a loss to Whitney Young but I enjoyed seeing the duo of 2020 6’3″ guard Marquel Bryant and 2023 6’3″ guard Jason Jackson were solid in this outing. Bryant had a vicious block of Steward in the first half that erupted his side. He finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. As for Jackson, he led his group with 15 points and shot 5-of-11 from the field. He is very athletic, strong and a determined shooter and ballhandler. His upside is apparent. 2021 6’5″ forward David Mazon had 10 points and fought the whole game.
