Olathe East won the opening game over Grandview Christian (60-50), Blue Valley North ran away from Pembroke Hill (80-50), Shawnee Mission East defeated Barstow (61-37) and Shawnee Mission West won the night cap over St James (52-47).
Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several Kansas players who stood out during the action.
Jack Sheplak, 6’3, SG, 2020, Blue Valley North
Tough in the open floor. Has good size at 6’3 with a long frame. Uses Euro step in the open floor to get around defenders and showed the ability to finish in transition. Sheplak can also stick an outside shot if left open and has a good feel for moving off the ball and getting open.
Tyler Clairbone, 6’3, G, 2022, St. James
Clairborne is a terrific shot created with a lot of upside. He has a strong frame with good size and athleticism and has a strong skill set, able to handle the ball and create off the bounce, get to the basket off the dribble and has a nice pull-up game. Clairborne can knock down outside shots, but is at his best taking the ball to the basket and finishing in the lane.
Kobe McGowan, 5’10,G, 2021, Shawnee Mission West
McGowan is a smooth guard with nice handles and an all-around offensive game. He showed at SME that he is a knock down perimeter shooter, but can also get in the lane and finish chances over bigger players with an array of floaters and runners.
Andrew Orr, 6’8, F, 2021, Blue Valley North
Orr is among Kansas’ most improved players with an emerging face-up game and an old-school post game. Orr is a strong rebounder at both ends of the floor, can score on the block and can drive the baseline and finish or play some at the high post. He threw down several dunks and was a defensive anchor for the Lancers.
Will Townsend, 6’7, PF, 2021, Shawnee Mission East
Townsend is a big man whose defense is a head of his offense for now. He brings bounce and a high activity level for a big, getting on the boards, battling for loose balls and challenging opponents around the basket. He runs runs the floor well and is a good finisher around the basket able to throw down dunks or finish a tough reverse.
