Santa Ana Mater Dei and Pacifica Christian/OC met in the championship game with the Monarchs cruising to a victory. Below are some of the under-the-radar players who made a name for themselves.
Charles Erving, Pacifica Christian
Erving made the move from Segerstrom to Pacifica Christian and the extra exposure and heightened level of competition should help his recruitment. The 6-foot-1 combo guard feeds off of physicality and uses his strong frame and explosive athleticism to finish through contact on the break. The most intriguing aspect of Erving’s game is his ability to rebound at a high rate from the guard position.
Efe Gucoglu, Corona del Mar
Gucoglu is one of the first players off of the Sea King’s bench and he’s only a freshman. The 6-foot-1 guard provides CdM with two important attributes: 1. He’s a consistent 3-point shooter with range when his feet are set and 2. Gucoglu is a high IQ defender and glue-guy who is willing to take a charge and dive on the floor for a loose ball.
Bradley Luna, Edison
As is normal for the Huntington Beach-based Chargers, Luna is a two-sport guy with his fall season spent on the football field as a defensive back. On the basketball court, the 6-foot-1 junior isn’t what you’d typically expect from a football player. He definitely brings toughness and physicality, but he also has some fluidness and shiftiness to his game that make him a guy who can create his own shot off the bounce.
Tyler Matthews, Los Alamitos
Matthews saw some time at the varsity level as a freshman and has continued to build on that into the beginning of his sophomore season. The 6-foot-2 point guard has a good overall feel for the game to go along with his elusiveness as a driver and finisher in transition. The next step for Matthews is to tighten up his ability to play out of ball-screen action in the half-court setting.
Bryce Warrecker, Santa Barbara
Warrecker is the definition of a stretch four or even stretch five man. The 6-foot-8 senior has a smooth shooting stroke from behind the arc, but does need his feet set and time and space to be consistent from that range. Warrecker is a good passer off the wing and found open cutters for layups multiple times in the game we saw. He does need to become a better rebounder on both ends of the floor and a stronger positional defender in the painted area.
