Over the next two days we will take a closer look at both brackets as well as some of the players that college programs will want to keep an eye on.
Laney HS features at least two players that should be on the radars of college coaches for 2020 and 2021. Junior Guard Makoa Suriago is a sharp shooting guard that can not only fill it up from three point land but also has a nice IQ for the game and can make plays from the PG spot. 2020 Forward Demarcus McLaurin is a player that can give you a double/double night, scoring and rebounding the ball at a nice rate, he already holds an offer from UNCP.
Fayetteville Christian has a nice group of talent with players in multiple classes that can play at different levels but two of the headliners for the Warriors fall in the 2020 class. Senior Forward Daunte Gardner has picked a nice amount of D3 interest and is a player that brings not only a high motor but quickness and slashing ability at the Forward spot. Senior Forward Jaden Scriven is another player that we really like and colleges have shared the same thoughts as he already holds a JC and D2 offer so far. His strength and athletic ability are what catches your attention but we like his overall skillset.
71st HS is in unfamiliar territory as they have a younger team and are looking to rebuild for the most part this season. One bright spot for the Falcons is Freshman Center Derrick Green who has the chance to be a very special big man before it’s all said and done.
EE Smith will be looking to bounce back after suffering a loss to South View HS but there are some positives for the Golden Bulls. Junior Guard Demetrius Polk is continuing to improve and Senior Forward Jaylen Siermons is back after missing the first month of the season with a foot injury. Siermons is a player that colleges will want to keep an eye on, once he gets his conditioning and feel for the game back, he could help this squad be quite dangerous late in the year.
Westover HS will be the host team and come into the tournament with a 7-0 record but it hasn’t been easy for the squad. They have played some talented teams early on in the season which has only helped them improved and come together as a squad. The Wolverines will continue to look to Star Junior Guard D’Marco Dunn to provide his explosive offense as well as high level play from Seniors Traymond Willis-Shaw, Isaiah Bridges, and Junior Guard Darius Jewell, all of who are college prospects.
Middle Creek is off to a nice start this season, suffering only one loss so far and getting nice production from Junior Guard Tharius Suggs at 18 PPG and Junior Forward Sam Perez at 15 PPG. Their matchup with Westover in the first round of the tournament has a chance to be a really good one with plenty of scoring on display.
Cape Fear has earned their respect as one of the better younger teams in the area and Freshman Tremayne Parker has quite a bit to do with that but he’s not alone. Sophomore RJ McDonald and Freshman Guard Massaun Moore are both players that we expect to put together some nice performances before it’s all said and done.
