Bishop Montgomery 56, Carlsbad 50 – Key Takeaways
Carlsbad’s Jailen Nelson has been one of San Diego’s toughest covers this seasonJailen Nelson willing his team along
The 5-10 senior point guard has been putting up impressive numbers all year, and shook off a rough first half to explode against the Knights’ perennially tough defense. Scoring from all three levels, Nelson had an answer for every time Bishop Montgomery threatened to put away the game. His only black mark was his game-high 7 turnovers, which was more a function of trying to make something happen when nothing was there than carelessness. Division 2s have been monitoring Nelson, with the major question being is his size a drawback at the next level. His start to his senior year should put those questions to bed.
Isaiah Johnson makes impact despite foul trouble
The 6-7 Oregon State signee was sidelined for much of the game with foul trouble, but when he was on the floor, the Knights were a different team. He only had 13 points, but it was his presence on offense that drew defenders, which led to teammates getting open looks, that really showed his value. But he did get to display his improved athleticism when he took a second-quarter pass in stride from the top of the key and finished with a highlight slam well above the rim.
Bryan Mex has been a key addition to the KnightsBryan Mex, Christian Bood underrated prospects
This isn’t your vintage Bishop Montgomery team, but there are quite a few diamonds in the rough. Leuzinger transfer Bryan Mex is a steady ball handler at the point and knocks down open threes. 6-6 senior forward Christian Bood battles on the boards (13 rebounds) and can knock down open threes off the catch. Both will play at some level at the next level.
Toby Harris coming of age for Carlsbad
The 5-9 sophomore guard doesn’t look like much, but he’s rapidly becoming an indispensable piece of the Lancers attack. A strong, crafty and determined lead guard, Harris attacked the defense for driving layups and hit two threes in the first half, both of which looked fluid and playable. Harris’ passing and unselfishness also make him a favorite among his teammates.
Shorthanded Lancers give maximum effort
Carlsbad only played six players the entire game due to injury and sit-out period omissions, but they were able to hang with Bishop Montgomery because they play so hard. Defensively, their players sit in a stance and crowd ball handlers at the urging of coach Sam Eshelman. When this team gets back its key pieces, they will be a legit dark horse in the CIF Open Division conversation.
