Chris Burg – 2020 – PG – Arrowhead
Having to replace Tyler Gouin, I didn’t think this Arrowhead team could get better from last season. Burg is a big reason why the Warhawks actually may be improved despite losing their leading scorer. He’s no the isolation presence or shooter that Gouin was, but he provides some of the same key elements, specifically the ability to change pace and keep defenders guessing. Burg caught the defense napping on a number of occasions and finished off some pretty drives to the rim. Burg is also a nice facilitator that plays within the structure of the offense. He finished with 19 points in Friday’s win.
Carter Gilmore – 2020 – F – Arrowhead
I don’t know when, but Gilmore is going to help Wisconsin at some point in his career. the UW walk-on was fantastic on Friday, posting 38 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. Gilmore has the versatility to beat defenders in so many ways. He can bring the ball up the floor and create mismatch problems on the dribble. He’s got an advanced post game when teams try to defend him with a guard. Gilmore can also act as a sniper from 3-point range. The 6-foot-8 forward was added some good strength and athleticism since the summer as well. The Badgers are getting a big steal here.
Sam Hytinen – 2021 – SF – Arrowhead
This is one of the biggest sleepers in the state and someone who will be an unsung hero for Arrowhead all season long. Hytinen battled foul trouble and finished with 12 points, but offensively, was able to get pretty much whatever he wants. The 6-foot-4 junior is an athletic wing who can shoot the rock from the outside. The lefty can catch and shoot on the perimeter and also slash to the bucket when defenders overplay him.
Cameron Palesse – 2021 – G – Waukesha West
Some have taken exception with how high I have Palesse in the class of 2021 rankings. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you want his spot, come take it from him. No, Palesse may not have the upside or wow people above the rim as others in the 2021 class, but he’s extremely consistent and his game isn’t solely reliant on putting the ball in the basket — although he did that pretty well on Friday. Palesse finished with a team-high 20 points. Had it not been for foul trouble, the junior guard would have made a strong run for 30. At 6-foot-3, Palesse always does a great job of playing to his strengths. He knows where his spots are on the floor and what makes him successful, absolutely living in the mid-range area.
Mac Wrecke – 2023 – SG – Arrowhead
There’s a lot to like about this youngster. Wrecke has great intangibles and just gets the game. The freshman starts for a really good Arrowhead team and doesn’t spend much time on the bench. Wrecke brings both high IQ and competitiveness to the floor. He’s got really good size and 6-foot-3 and a terrific blend of skill and athleticism for such a young prospect. While the Warhawks were in control from the opening tip, Wrecke just played with a confidence and fearlessness that you don’t see from many freshmen just seven games into their careers. He knocked down his open 3-pointers, attacked the paint, and challenged defenders at the rim en route to 14 points.
