This was the first game of the season for Menlo, and Mitty’s second after a big first win against last years Div II State Champs Campolindo last week. The Monarchs didn’t come out on fire like last week, which allowed Menlo to stay close in the first qtr. 10-8. Mitty did manage to get things going in the 2nd with the continued good play of Owen Browne who had 9 points and gave Mitty a halftime lead of 25-16. Eventually Mitty got it going and ran away from a spirited Menlo team. 72-39. Here are some standouts for the game.
Archbishop Mitty Monarchs
Once again Mitty started five guys 6’3 and 6’2, while bringing two bigs off the bench. Arrish Bhandal 6’9 2021 center who did some good things this game. He’s a tall noticeable body who has some presence on the defensive end, he had 3 blocks that led to transition baskets. He can score, but not consistently, his footwork, speed and strength has to improve. Nigel Burris the 6’7 transfer has a couple of DI offers but is still adjusting in the early season to his new team! He has the tools, size, strength, and athleticism. he’s going to have to be patient and keep working to find a way to help this team. He had 16 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.
Mitty had three starters scoring in double figures. Michael Mitchell 6’3 2021 point guard (Pepperdine) scored 15. Owen Browne 6’3 2020 kept up his solid play scoring 14 points, and Marcus Greene 6’3 2020, made a solid contribution adding 13 points, 5 rebounds, and two 3 pointers in victory.
Menlo
Cole Kastner 6’7 2020 prospect who’s going to play Lacrosse (UVA) is the go to guy on Menlo. He’s a good all-around prospect who can score inside and out. He played post and displayed a variety of left and right hand finishes with good footwork. He bounced outside and knocked down mid range jumpers and corner 3’s. He handles and pushes in transition. He can play point guard for this team if needed. He contributed 20 points 9 rebounds. Good athlete.
Garret Kayhani a 6’7 2022 forward for Menlo has an upside to his game, he’s got to get stronger but his fundamentals are there. His footwork in the post area needs some work. He stepped outside and made a 3 pointer and he runs the floor. He had 11 points 4 rebounds and 2 blocks. He’s a player to keep and eye on.
Chris Hooks 6’7 2021 forward gives Menlo 3 players with good size who can be a match up problem for some teams. Hooks didn’t start, but he didhave a presence on defense making it a little harder for the Monarchs to have their way inside. He had a couple of rebounds, he’ll be more productive as the season advances.
