Lipsey is a 6’2″ point guard in the class of 2022 and started 22 games for Ames High last season as a true freshman.
Rivals currently has him rated as a three-star recruit, but Lipsey averaged 17 points on 52% shooting and just over 4.5 assists in his freshman year, and many view him as the best college prospect in the state. His rating should improve as his high school career progresses.
Lipsey plays in Ames, conveniently located in the same city as Iowa State University who, along with Nebraska, has already offered him a scholarship. Iowa State’s in-state rival, the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, have not offered him a scholarship, but many believe he is a lock to stay home and play for the Cyclones of Iowa State.
That being said, Iowa State’s chances to land the uncommitted guard may have taken a hit when they squared off against the Hawkeyes Thursday night.
Before that game though, Iowa State faced 16th ranked Seton Hall in Ames Sunday night with Lipsey in attendance. Hilton Magic was in full swing that night as the close to capacity crowd created an unbelievable atmosphere for their hometown team to perform in, and Iowa State won by 10. It was an impressive thing to witness.
But on Thursday night, the atmosphere was quite different when the Cyclones played the Hawkeyes in the heated in-state, Cy-Hawk rivalry. Iowa State went into halftime down 24-39, and they lost by about the same margin.
There were moments of success from the Cyclones which resulted in tremendous roars from the sell-out crowd. But those moments didn’t result in sustained success, and Lipsey witnessed the Cyclones fall to their in-state rival in embarrassing fashion.
Iowa fans could be heard chanting “Let’s Go Hawks” at the end of the game while Iowa State fans were headed for the exits, and Hawkeye senior guard, Jordan Bohannon, signed his shoes to the Cyclone fans and left them on the court after the game, a clear dig at the Cyclone faithful.
Lipsey sat front row for that game too, something Hawkeye fans, players, and coaches surely reveled in.
While one game may not sway the college decision of Lipsey too much, if at all, the Cyclones did not do themselves any favors if they hope to land him in the 2022 recruiting season. And if the Hawkeyes had any plans to peruse the Ames High star, they took a massive step in the right direction to do so.
