I was in town for day 2, and 3. There were 4 games played. Here are the standouts for game two day 2.
Weston Ranch 67, Gridley 51
MVP Grant Tull 6’7 2021 guard. Gridley
Tull is a competitor, who’s improved his offensive skill set. At 6’7 he does a good amount of ball handling for this team in open court, and half court sets. He showed his versatility when he worked his way around the post finishing with jumps hooks, using the left and the right with good footwork. His outside shooting kept it close for a while. His stat line was 27 points, 4 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 3 steals. As usual he wins most of the loose balls, because he’s alway the first one diving for them.
Best Offensive Player: Mi’Son Coilton 6’2, 2021 guard, Weston Ranch
Coilton is a big bulky guard with good handles, who can handle the contact, and can physically force his way to the basket by pure strength. He has good body control and can be very effective when he gets into the paint and goes up on two. He has a long range when it comes to hitting 3’s. He was way behind the line when he nailed five 3’s in this contest to go for 20 points.
Best Defensive Player
Donjae’ Lindsey 6’2 guard 2021, Weston Ranch
Lindsey didn’t have to carry the load in scoring in this game. He was able to show that he can be a top defender for this team. His quick hands led to 6 steals in this game. He did show his flash of athleticism with a couple of nice steal and dunks. 14 points, 6 steals, 3 assist.
Best Off The Bench Player
Kodey Weary, 6’4 forward 2023, Weston Ranch
This young Freshman continues to do good things when he’s on the court. In this game he made his presence known right away by being a force inside. The long wiry prospect altered shots, rebounded, and had some nice finishing moves around the basket including a jump hook he went to more than once. He showed some flashes of an outside game when he completed a 2 dribble drive from the wing. He runs the lanes in transition. 14 points,6 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots.
Best Underclassmen also goes to Weary 6’4 2023 forward. He’s going to attract attention because of his all around play. He can handle the ball in the open court, he can finish with either hand around the rim. He’s long and wiry and moves very well. He has a decent mid-range game that he’ll continue to develop. He’s a prospect worth keeping an eye on.
Best Rebounder
This goes to Gavin Wilburn 6’4 2020 guard who in the past had to work from the inside to help this team. He’s able to work his outside game a little more, now that they have some size in the middle, but I think he’ll help this team more if he works around the basket a little more. He’s a good rebounding guard. He grabbed 9 rebounds and had 9 points.
Best Passer
Tony Murillo 5’11 2020 point guard, Gridley
Considering the competition this team was up against. I thought Murillo did a decent job balancing the floor, and getting the ball to teammates in good position to score, he’s a pass first guard who can hit the mid-range shot. He had a game high of 7 assists with 1 turnover.
Intangibles
The Gridley boys basketball team. The host, they know they’re going up against teams that could very well be in a state championship game at seasons end. Every game this team goes out and competes to the best of their ability. This will help this team when they play teams in their own league.
Best Story to Watch
Weston Ranch has a record of 1 win and 4 losses. It would be easy for some to say this team has underachieved. If you look at the teams they’ve played in the early going. The 4 losses are to ranked teams and on the road. They have a good Freshman 6’4 Weary and a 6’5 Transfer who’s adjusting to his new surrounding. That would be a challenge for any team. I think it’s going to help them.
