When I saw the schedule online I couldn’t help but notice one particular matchup that was certainty a gift for basketball lovers all over. Let’s discuss it!
1) Did the Mikey Williams vs Donovan Yap matchup live up to the billing?
As far as individual backcourt matchups are concerned it doesn’t get any better than the freshmen phenom Mikey Williams vs Donovan Yap. This matchup alone is worth full price of admission. Neither young man slacked in their role of making this a compelling ball game. Yap was a stat sheet stuffer like Ice Cube once said Yap messed around and got a triple-double. Yap had 21 points 11 rebounds and 10 assists on the night. He was a head catalyst in a solid tournament win for Arbor View. As far as Mikey Williams is concerned the freshman led the game in points with 39 points. At this point there are three things that are certain in life death, taxes and Mikey Williams scoring over 30 in a game. He’s averaging an insane 33 points per game. The aspect of his game I’m really blown away with is how effortlessly he’s able to get to the free throw line. He had 20 attempts from the FT line that’s a very James Harden like number. If you have never seen Mikey Williams play the game of basketball do yourself the favor and do so!
2) Is Arbor View the deepest team in Nevada?
Unless you’re a team like Sierra Canyon or Gormon what is depth really? Those teams can use insane lineups at any time. Arbor View is a full on unit I would consider them one of the deepest dangerous teams in the state. Outside of Donovan Yap it is really death by 1000 cuts with this team. They have multiple young men on their roster that can go for 20 at any given moment Mikey Medlock this game led the team in scoring with 24. They are a great rebounding team anytime your starting point guard can get 10 rebounds that is an absolute luxury. When you have young men like Jaylon Lee have a game with 17 rebounds and David Moore who averages 11 rebounds on the season. They are a well balanced team that can beat you in multiple ways. Their depth is certainly a strength. Arbor view is a team that can go nine deep at anytime and not a lot of teams can make that claim.
3) Does San Ysidro have the best pair of Freshman on the west?
For my money I am going to say yes emphatically. Mikey Williams earned my respect alone scoring 50 points in front of Dwayne Wade. When Flash gives you that “FACE” we all know that face. Who are we to not take notice of your talents? If I haven’t already done so enough I will say more about Mikey Williams. He may be the best individual scorer in the country let alone the west. If you consider in this young season alone a freshman went on and dropped multiple 50 point games and a 77 point game YES! I’m giving you the D Wade face. 77 points yeah we are all on notice Mikey. Not to take a backseat because San Ysidro has another fantastic freshman in Jurian Dixon. Dixon is a perfect backcourt mate for Williams because Dixon may be one of the best two-way players in all the west. Dixon already this year has had a 10 steal game. Dixon is the type of player that can score 20 every night in fact his average is at about 19.9 on the nose. Dixon is a willing passer if he sees Williams is on a scoring tangent he will feed the hot hand and not steal the shine. However, if he has to be the guy he will. If this backcourt stays together all four years it will be a show for the ages. These two young men are special.
4) What stat jumped out the most?
This was a game despite the 94-76 score I define as a buffet game. It had a little bit of everything. Donovan Yap had a triple-double. Mikey Williams got to the free-throw line an insane 20 times and had 39 points. Mikey Medlock shot 73% from the floor. For me what jumped out the most was Jaylon Lee’s stat line. As we all know basketball is the ulitmate team sport. To win a state championship which is the ultimate goal for every team you need a person on your team that isn’t afraid to get dirty. Senior Jaylon Lee had an amazing game under the bright lights Lee had 11 points 17 rebounds and 3 blocks. When you go against scorers of Williams and Dixon’s caliber their gonna get their points that is what they do. However, if you make their night harder by shutting things around them down and not allowing second chances for big plays that equals up to victory. Lee was the eraser and his effort helped set the tone for a big victory for his team.
5) What won the game for Arbor View?
Arbor View’s depth and veteran leadership ultimately was the deciding factor in the ball game. When a team can go 9 deep and your star can have a triple-double and control the pace of a ball game that ultimately helps to secure victory. Half of San Ysidro’s points came from two people. When your team ends the game with 76 and 65 of those points come from two individuals. Arbor View had the stronger team overall and that is the main catalyst in a 94-76 game.
