Zumwalt North came out on a mission and their star wing KJ Lee was red hot. He nearly outscored Lindbergh himself in the 1st quarter. The Panthers led 20-11 after one period and extended out to a comfortable 36-18 halftime lead. In the second half the two teams traded buckets and Lindbergh was unable to cut too deep into the deficit. Fort Zumwalt North got the victory by a final score of 68-53 and advances to quarterfinal play tomorrow.
Here’s a look at our “5 Stars” from this opening round match-up:
5 Stars: 6’6 Jr KJ Lee (Fort Zumwalt North)
One of the elite shooters in the area, KJ came out of the gates hot against Lindbergh. He knocked down a couple threes in route to a ten point first quarter. He runs off screens hard and always sets his feet in rhythm with the catch to get off a quality look. He is much more than a shooter and impressed by using his length defensively to disrupt the passing lanes. He showed off his vision with several quarterback worthy outlet passes in transition and a nasty behind the back dime. He finished with a game high 20 points for the Panthers.
4 Stars: 6’2 Sr Devin Edwards (Fort Zumwalt North)
I really like the way Devin plays. Quick and shifty with the rock, he excels as a slasher that gets downhill in a hurry and into the paint where he has good vision to find cutters and open shooters. He can score when he needs to, better off the bounce but capable from beyond the arc. Plus defender. Has a nose for the ball and is a factor on the offensive glass.
3 Stars: 6’4 Jr Carter Knuckles (Lindebergh)
Carter had a nice game and was a bright spot for the Flyers. He is a refreshing player to watch that brings an old school toughness and effort approach to the game. Nothing flashy but he gets it done. Attacks with a head of steam in transition. Smart player that sets his defender up and will sneak behind the D for a backdoor. Stepped out and drilled a wing three as well.
2 Stars: 6’7 Sr Mujtaba Alkhaldi (Fort Zumwalt North)
Biggest man on the floor and was able to use his size to impose his will on the block for stretches during the game. His footwork and touch are starting to become more polished. Does a nice job of sealing his man deep under the rim for easy buckets. Controls the glass and protects the rim.
1 Star: 6’5 Sr Aidan Scott (Lindbergh)
Aidan did some nice things offensively for the Flyers, who need to add some scoring punch. He buried a pair of three-pointers from the top of the key, got multiple defenders in the air for a nice head-fake finish, and took off in transition for a nice step-thru lay-in to finish in double figures.
