Salpointe Catholic is undoubtedly the top team in 4A, as of now. They are currently 8-0 and have been demolishing teams. The three headed monster of Nelson, Gainey, and Weitman have been very efficient, averaging 14-17 points per game each. My guess is that Salpointe Catholic will remain the #1 spot in the power rankings for a while.
#2 St. Mary’s 5-0
St. Mary’s has gotten off to a hot start and has been looking very impressive. Their last 3 games have all ended in a blowout win. I predicted coming into the season that St. Mary’s would be a sleeper for the 4A State Championship and so far, they are proving me right. The play of Garrison Phelps and Bear Cherry has stood out to me personally.
#3 Catalina Foothills 7-0
Catalina Foothills has put together quite an impressive record and recently has been blowing teams out of the water. Catalina Foothills is always going to be near the top of their conference due to their excellent coaching staff. No official stats are up yet so I don’t want to misquote anything from their team or season up to this point.
#4 Shadow Mountain 6-1
Many people, myself included, expected a huge drop off for this team coming into the season. The team had lost the majority of their players and their coaching staff that led them to 4 straight state championships. However, Shadow Mountain still looks really solid! Shemar Morrow is having a ridiculous season and looks better than ever. Shadow Mountain could be a sleeper team to look out for.
#5 Buckeye 6-1
Buckeye has put together a solid season this far, behind the play of Tay Boothman. Many expected Tay to put up big numbers scoring wise since he is clearly running the show. Buckeye is now 6-1, with their only loss of the season coming to Skyline, who is one of the best teams in the entire state. As of now, Boothman is averaging 23.5 points per game and leading his squad to an impressive regular season.
