Behind strong performances from sophomore guard Amarr Knox and senior forward Xavier Joubert, Central defeated the Wildcats by the final score of 85-63 to improve to 7-1 of the season.
Many didn’t expect Central to be this good early in the season, especially in Class AAA but the Warriors are here and are trying to make a statement to other teams in the league and in their district. It’s still early in the season to say Central is a legit contender in Class AAA but the Warriors are winning games right now.
Here are 3 takeaways from Central’s win over Bolton:
Amarr Knox is a star in the making
The 6-foot-2 guard had his way against Bolton. He played solid defense, got easy scores in transition, made 3s and was able to get into the lane with ease. The Wildcats didn’t have an answer for the sophomore. He led all scorers with 30 points. Knox will need to improve on his free throw shooting. It’s not a good look for a guard to make just 50 percent of his foul shots.
Xavier Joubert was a hand full
The senior forward was all over the glass. Even though Joubert is only 6-4, he plays bigger than his height. There wasn’t much Bolton could do to keep Joubert off the glass or out of the paint. He finished with 25 points. Joubert would have scored over 30 points if more of his foul shots would have fallen. He made just 3 of 9 shots from the charity stripe.
Bolton is still learning how to play with one another
It will take more time for the Wildcats to play up to their full potential. Bolton’s young lineup is still trying to figure things out. Sophomore guard Jamarius Carter led the team in scoring with 14. Seniors Terrance Banks and Ricky Williams had 11 for Bolton. Sophomore guard Cornelius Collins added 10. The team just had too many turnovers that led to easy scores for the home team. In the first quarter alone, the Wildcats committed nine turnovers and were still able to get back into the game in the second quarter, thanks to forcing turnovers.
After trailing by double digits at the beginning of the second quarter, Bolton got within five after a score by Collins but turnovers and defensive lapses pushed the Wildcats’ deficit back up to 45-35 heading into halftime.
