The updated rankings have seen the addition of many talented players who have already had an impact on the early season. Their ability to change the on both end is a welcoming sign for a class full of high-end players. Here are the top newly ranked game-changers in the class of 2022.
Elmarko Jackson, 6’3 PG St. Augustine
Jackson led the Hermits in scoring in their season opener against Trenton, showcasing his ability to change the game. The sophomore point guard is extremely explosive as he loves to soar in for high-flying dunks. Jackson is not just a high-flyer as he is also a crafty finisher around the basket and solid perimeter shooter. Despite not recording a steal or block in the opener, Jackson is a good defender capable of stopping the ball against anyone. He is one of the better young point guards in South Jersey and a true game-changer for the Hermits in 2019-20.
Daniel Skillings, 6’5 SG/SF St. Joseph(Hammonton)
The Highland transfer has started the season on fire as he just had a 25-point, 14-rebound performance in his last game. Skillings is an extremely skilled wing with the ability to put the ball on the floor, score at the rim and knock down perimeter shots. He is also an underrated rebounder as the 6’5 sophomore has seven double-doubles in his early varsity career. Skillings is an elite athlete and uses it on the defensive end to get blocks and steals. His ability to impact the game on both ends makes St. Joseph(Hammonton) a dangerous team in Non-Public B South.
Deywilk Tavarez, 6’0 PG Highland
Highland may have lost a game-changing sophomore in Skillings, but it gained one in Tavarez. The 6’0 point guard has good handles and he uses them to get into the lane. Tavarez excels at finishing around the basket, but he can also drill three-pointers if you give him space. The Pennsauken transfer is capable of getting hot in a hurry as Tavarez put up 27 points against Trenton Catholic to close out his freshman year. Tavarez has yet to fully hit his stride for Highland, but he is capable of putting up points in a hurry.
Daniel Vessey, 6’2 SG Hun School
Vessey may not handle the ball like some of the other players on this list, but he is an elite shooter. His play against the Patrick School at the Hoop Group Tip-off Showcase cemented his status as a shooter. Vessey had a game-high 14 points off the bench as he drilled four-three pointers and was named game MVP for Hun. He also had a nice looking layup and held his own on the defensive end for the Hun School. Vessey can shoot the ball as well anyone in the sophomore class, making him one of the more dangerous game-changers on this list.
Donovan Long, 6’6 SF/PF Marist
Long has been a pleasant surprise for Ben Gamble this season as the 6’6 sophomore impacts the game on both ends. He excels at finishing around the rim where he uses his strong frame to finish tough shots. Long is a good rebounder who rarely allows opponents to grab rebounds on him. He is also a very good defender as he uses his size, length and quickness to get steals and blocks. Long is not a player who will score over 20 points a game, but he is a game-changer with his play on the defensive end.
