Will Felton is the best big man in the 2021 class
2021 big man Will Felton was an unstoppable force in the Millbrook Showcase. He posted his sixth double-double in seven games in a big 83-64 victory over Ben L. Smith Golden Eagles with 29 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks in a convincing win over a top team in the 3A ranks. Felton set the tone early with his play in the post and it opened things up a ton for his teammates. 2021 wing Eric van der Heijden finished with 12 points, six rebounds and six assists. 2020 forward Jalen McCoy finished with 18 points as well. After the victory, it’s looking like the Wildcats will once again be a tough team to beat in 2019-20 if not the best team in 4A.
Greenfield School holds off Carter Whitt
2021 guard Carter Whitt and Leesville Road gave Greenfield School an early season scare but in the end, the Knights came out on top 69-65. Whitt scored 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting but Greenfield saw four of their five starters finish scoring in double-figures and used their balanced attack to outscore Leesville Road 26-19 in the fourth quarter. 2020 guard Creighton Lebo led the way with 16 points and a solid defensive effort on Whitt. He had some big steals down the stretch. 2020 forward Trey Pittman finished with a double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds). He also surpassed the 1,000-point scoring mark. Wake Forest commit Dji Bailey finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Collin Guilford finished with 13 points as well. The Knights did well to contain Whitt as they held him to 1-of-8 shooting from behind the arc.
Trinity Christian trio wins convincingly
Trinity Christian of Fayetteville jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the first quarter against Holly Springs and never looked back as they earned a 63-44 victory behind the efforts of 2022 guard Cam Oates, 2020 guard Marcus Boykin and 2020 forward Todd Burt Jr.. Boykin led the team with 15 points off the bench while Oates put up 13 points and Burt had 12 points. It seemed like whenever Trinity Christian needed points, they knew who to go to as Oates, Boykin or Burt always ended up on the receiving end of the basketball. It also helped they held Holly Springs to 5-of-22 shooting in the first half.
Garner trumps Heritage in a crosstown matchup
Garner Magnet got a marquee victory over Heritage High School, overcoming a combined 45 points from 2021 duo Lucas Taylor and Red Dunton. 2020 point guard Daveon Dunn nearly posted a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds for Garner while 2020 Christopher Nobles posted 18 points and 2022 Ben Hines had 16 points on four made 3-pointers. The Trojans came out the gates early and jumped out to a 22-11 lead after one quarter and continued to get shots they wanted. As a team, they shot 58 percent from the field and in the second half, they shot 65 percent from the field. This should be a good confidence-boosting win for this team.
Westover and Granville Central battle in the Game of the Day
The Game of the Day was easily the opening game of the Millbrook Showcase against Westover and Granville Central. Westover’s Darius Jewell drained a 30-footer at the buzzer to give his squad a 58-57 victory. It was their first lead all game as both teams battled back and forth all game long. Granville Central led 25-20 at halftime but they couldn’t hold onto the lead in the final seconds. 2021 guard Terence Harcum Jr. posted 25 points and six rebounds for Granville Central while 2021 guard D’Marco Dunn put up 23 points and seven rebounds for Westover. It was quite the battle to start the day for the Millbrook Showcase.
