We are already at the holiday break and through the first month of the season. There have been some big-time performances throughout the state. Prep Hoops Colorado has done our best to get out to as many games as we can and have seen plenty of these players this season. Here, we focus on some of the top scorers in the state. If you are not already a subscriber, use the promo code “Dev30” for 30% off of your first billing cycle and start the new year off with a bang.
Wesley Ryan – De Beque
De Beque was the 1A champs last season after an undefeated season and many thought there would be some fall off as one of the best players in the state moved out of state. Well, they still have the 1A player of the year from last season ready to take home the title for another season. De Beque is 6-0 to begin the season with solid contributions from multiple players as they have four players scoring in double figures but their best player again has been Ryan who has been on a tear to start the season and picked up exactly where he left off. He is at 27 points a game and is also grabbing 12 rebounds a game as well. He scores in every single way and with him playing the way that he is that is going to be a tough team to beat.
Logan Owen – Belleview Christian
Owen is a player that we got to see a few times over the summer which is great to measure him against the state’s top talent. A lot of times the idea is that players in the smaller schools cannot translate that against the higher classifications. That could not be further from the truth as Owen is able to score no matter who it is that is in front of him. He is confident with the ball in his hands and knocks down open shots. He can put the ball on the floor and also finish at the rim where he is now even dunking the ball. Last season he was able to put up 18 points a game but through six games has seen those numbers rise even more. He is at 26.2 points a game in his junior season and remains one of the smaller school’s best scorers.
Josh Duran –Antonito
Antonito is not a team that scores a ton of points as they only average 42 points a game so it makes the fact that their leading scorer Josh Duran is putting up 26 points a game that much more impressive. Every single team knows who is going to take the shots, understands that he is going to try and light them up and implements a game-plan to stop him and he is still able to get his. He shoots the ball but is also able to get inside and finish. If he does not finish, teams are having to foul him so he can get to the FT line and finish. Duran is a volume shooter with high upside and will have to be a player we take a deep look at.
Cole Christensen – Sangre de Cristo
Sangre de Cristo is off to a 5-0 start as they sit in 1stin the 1A Southern Peaks league and it has been on the back of their Senior guard Cole Christensen who is having a sensational start to the season. He is putting up a stat-stuffing 25.6 points, 6.4 assists, and five rebounds a game and also has two steals per contest to go along with it. He is turning defense to offense and while he is able to shoot the ball as well a lot of what he does is inside. He has done it all for the Thunderbirds and they will continue to ride him as the season progresses.
Ethan Maze – William Smith
William Smith is not a school that I have heard much about but through four games they have a player in Ethan Maze that is putting up some big numbers. He is a 6’4 forward that is putting up 24 points a game and also has 11.5 rebounds to go along with it. He is the only player on his team averaging in double figures and while he is not shooting many 3-pointers a game he has been very efficient from beyond the arc.
