Here were 10 observations from the two games I viewed:
#1 Mesquite has a decent core of freshman led by Cohen J Gonzales and Maurice Lakes.
#2 Mesquite has some nice sophs on JV that may go to JV starter to varsity starter including Nick Rogers.
#3 Vince Delano is a talented freshman that stars on JV. He would probably play some good minutes in different programs around the state but the Knights are so deep at the guard spot.
Here were some of the top prospects from JV:
St. Mary’s 88 Mesquite 84 2 OT
Vincent Delano CG 5’9 2023 St. Mary’s
-He had a big time game on JV in a wild 2 OT win. He led the Knights to the win with 31 points, 8 assists plus 3 key steals. Outside of the impressive stats it is how he did it. He has a sharp pull-up off the dribble and he comes with deep 3pt range off the catch. He has a calming feel when the ball is in his hands that he will make the correct play. Smart player, high IQ and skilled.
Nick Rogers SG 5’11 2022 Mesquite
-Another strong showing in the game. Rogers had an impressive 38 points. He is mostly an athletic driver who is shifty and gets by players easily. He has a stronger build/frame and should play heavy minutes or even start next year on varsity. He can make others better plus hit the 3.
Varsity game:
#4 The Mesquite varsity just got their football players back and should start winning more games but it came with an injury to Christian Ashe.
#5 Mesquite had a big win vs Shadow Mountain but Ricky Hernandez broke his nose. So they are now down two starters. Hopefully the full team will all be healed by the end of January.
#6 With Mesquite’s full roster, they can be a Final-4 contender.
#6 Mesquite’s Nathan Calmese is the real deal.
#7 St. Mary’s Deven Dahlke and Mesquite’s Jordan Wollangk are nice sleeper guards in the senior class.
#8 St. Mary’s bench had to step up and did. They filled their roles with Garrison Phelps injured. Soph guards Orlando Gonzales and Jacob Estrella both played well.
#9 If Garrison Phelps is out for a long time, it will definitely make it harder to win it all in 4A.
#10 Here were the Varsity standouts:
St. Mary’s 63 Mesquite 50
Jason Fontenet Jr PG 6’2 2023 St. Mary’s (Pictured)
-Another strong showing for the freshman. He defends at a high level, makes plays for others and is starting to get more comfortable on offense as he plays more. He has a nice pull-up and can get into the lane to score.
Keiren “KP” Brown PG 6’2 2021 St. Mary’s (Pictured)
-The physical guard made some critical plays down the stretch. He is a physical guard who gets into the lane and looks for contact. He made a pull-up plus hit a 3.
Deven Dahlke SG 6’2 2020 St. Mary’s (Pictured)
-The strong framed shooter is breaking out this year. He is a good shooter, he rebounds well and can score it inside with his left or right hand.
Jordan Wollangk PG 5’11 2020 Mesquite
-A thick pure PG also plays safety and WR in football. He loves getting into the lane and will make a play for his teammates. He is a physical rebounder and on-ball defender. He likes the elbow pull-up and can hit a catch deep 3. Easily the most important player for the Wildcats.
Nathan Calmese PG 6’1 2022 Mesquite
-A talented and smooth scoring lead guard. He is a very good passer and an efficient scorer. He can score it from all 3 levels and gets to the cup in only two steps with his long strides. He makes many extra passes and plays an unselfish game. He has a clean stroke from deep and he will have and already had many huge 30+ games this HS season.
