Here were 10 observations from the two games I viewed:
#1 Desert Vista freshman team is down the first time since I have been scouting in AZ.
#2 Both JV teams had one good freshman each and some nice sophs.
Here were some of the top prospects from JV:
Desert Vista 78 St. Mary’s 40
Vincent Delano CG 5’9 2023 St. Mary’s
-Plays with a good pace and understands how to play the game with a good feel for the game. He talks on defense and although he was the youngest on the team, he is already directing his teammates. He makes good reads and has a quick shooting stroke. He can drive it but is best at shooting it from the perimeter.
Stanley Mason SG 6’1 2022 St. Mary’s
-A very consistent shooter off the catch. He has good length and gets it off quickly. He likes to hit from the 3pt line plus from mid-range. He can improve his handle but he is a solid rebounder and a confident scorer.
Varsity game:
#3 Both teams have almost all of their top younger prospects on varsity already. Which obviously means they will keep winning in the next few years.
#4 Osasere Ighodaro will prob avg 10-15 pts a game and he doesn’t even have to score more then 6-8 a night and would still be one of the most valuable players in 6A because of his elite defense. He blocks shots at an astonishing rate and missed a triple double Friday night by 1 point with 9 points 12 rebounds and 10 blocks.
#5 Dasean Lecque is a bucket. Simply put.
#6 Garrison Phelps is an athletic stud.
#7 Jason Fontenet Jr is going to be really good.
#8 St. Mary’s has a realistic chance at winning 4A. They are well coached by Damin Lopez, share the ball and have enough upperclassman to be team leaders.
#9 Desert Vista needs to keep improving their offense as the year goes on. They lost to Boulder Creek with only 53 points on Thursday night and had only 61 in regulation. They definitely have the talent but could improve.
#10 Here were the Varsity standouts:
Desert Vista 71 St. Mary’s 64 OT
Deven Dhalke SG 6’2 2020 St. Mary’s
-A scoring guard with good strength. He can hit from the 3pt line plus likes to pull-up from mid-range. He has great confidence and really set the tone early on that this was going to be a legit game. He has good length and defends the 1-3. The senior should have a big year.
Keiren “KP” Brown PG 6’2 2021 St. Mary’s
-A thick lead guard with great strength. He likes posting up and getting downhill. He is a capable 3pt shooter but can keep progressing. Arguably the leader of the team and is a fierce competitor.
Garrison Phelps SG 6’4 2022 St. Mary’s
-Arguably the most athletic soph in state. He is a quick on the ball defensively and a stud in the open break. He plays way above the rim and has power. He can make perimeter jumpers out to the 3pt line. He has a stronger build/frame and a huge wingspan.
Jason Fontenet Jr PG 6’2 2023 St. Mary’s
-A bigger freshman lead guard who is very athletic. He defends his position better than most with a huge motor and held his own vs some of the top Desert Vista players. He rebounds well and also sets up his team smartly. He has a bright future for the Knights.
Bear Cherry PF 6’8 2022 St. Mary’s
-A huge post player with massive hands. He has immense strength and girth to go to work in the paint. He has a nice hook shot and a touch on his jumper. He can plays above the rim on the break and is another good looking soph.
Dasean Lecque PG 6’0 2022 Desert Vista
-A walking bucket can create his own shot at any time. His pull-up is nasty and makes catch 3’s and shots off the dribble. His ability to get into the lane with his tight handle and score vs the post players is a thing of beauty with his supreme body control. He had a game high 36 points.
