Here were 10 observations from the two games I viewed:
#1 Both JV teams are stacked with talented youth.
Here were some of the top prospects:
Brophy Prep 69 Desert Vista 66
Arman Madi SF 6’5 2023 Brophy Prep
-Uber talented top-10 type of freshman. He had an easy 15 points with multiple 3’s and perimeter shots. He is very athletic, as they attempted an alley-oop to him. What sets this one apart is his passing ability. He threaded the needle on multiple occasions, as he is not just a “scorer”. He handles the ball well and can create his own shot. He plays a little too fast at times but the talent it clearly there.
Tyler Powell PF 6’6 2022 Brophy Prep
-A gifted 3-sport star has basketball reportedly as his third sport with baseball and football as his other two. He already has High Major offers in football and is highly coveted in baseball. Meanwhile in hoops, he has an incredible frame/build and rebounds anything near him with a great motor. He can score it around the hoop and it will be interesting which sport he chooses.
Brandon Trillie SF 6’3 2023 Desert Vista
-A long and lean highly skilled wing forward. He has a smooth 3pt shot and is very smart. He is a good passer, moves smartly without the ball and is a very good on-ball defender. He gets really low in his stance and does every fundamental thing he needs to do.
Daylyn Martin CG 5’11 2022 Desert Vista
-A skilled guard who can really shoot it. He has a good feel for the game and can make plays for others but he is best at putting the ball in the hole. He can shoot it consistently from mid to the 3pt line.
Varsity game:
#2 Both schools are loaded with their 2022 classes.
#3 Brophy has put together another nice 2023 class.
#4 Desert Vista can win it all in 6A this year.
#5 If DV wants to win it all, they can’t breakdown in the 4th qtr and need to finish off teams when up big and not let them back in the game.
#6 Brophy entire program just plays the game the right way and play TOUGH on all 3 levels.
#7 The 2 transfers (Lecque and Solomon) for DV will greatly help them in their title run.
#8 Senior forward Arnold Dates from Brophy may be the strongest hooper I have ever seen.
#9 Despite the loss, Brophy has a lot of heart to not give up. Down 22 after 3, they went on a huge 4th qtr run to close the gap to only 8 pts.
#10 Here were the Varsity standouts:
DV 84 Brophy Prep 76
Osasere Ighodaro PF 6’9 2020 DV
-Had 20 points on the night but it was his defense that affected this game the most. He had 5 blocks plus probably 5 alters and made other players nervous he would block their shots. He moves fluidly around the court and can shoot it to the 3pt line. He can get stronger moving forward but all the tools are there for college ball. He committed to Marquette.
Dasean Lecque PG 6’0 2022 DV
-He has come in from out of state and taken the lead role seamlessly. He plays with good pace and has speed to kill with an unreal burst. He is lean but takes contact really well and has a knack for scoring in the paint or getting to the line. He has a sharp pull-up off the dribble and can make the 3pt shot.
Andrew King SG 6’2 2022 DV
-Deadly shooter off the catch from the 3pt line and can make a 1-dribble pull-up from mid-range. He has a stronger upper body and is tough to rebound inside. He plays a smart floor game and has been one of the best pure shooters I have viewed from any grade.
Joe Feeney F 6’4 2020 Brophy
-Hard nosed forward who is tough and skilled. He is a little undersized but has deep 3pt range and is a physical rebounder. He is a smart passer and defender.
Miles Nash PG 5’11 2022 Brophy
-A very shifty pure PG who knows how to change speeds. He has a nice burst into the lane and makes some good passes to set up his teammates. He also is quick on the ball defensively but he will need to make strides with his perimeter shooting moving forward.
