Both teams got off to a very slow start but Atkins would eventually get their rhythm and take the win. Let’s take a few moments to look at some of the things we learned in this matchup.
Atkins HS Senior Forward Avante Matthews is a physical forward! His stat line from the game won’t necessarily be anything to scream about but overall he was solid and played his role. He rebounded it at a nice rate, defended the interior without fouling and set good screens for his team to help get the guards open for looks.
Lee County Senior Forward Jarrian Hancock was solid! The 6’6 prospect was the primary contributor on both ends of the floor for his squad, coming up with buckets in the paint offensively and blocked shots on the defensive end. One of the attributes that we liked about him is that he understands how to use his size, he doesn’t bring the ball down to often when he’s looking to score in the paint, and alters shots without fouling on defense.
Atkins HS Junior Guard Yusef Suggs Jr was impressive! Probably the best overall scorer in the gym, he was extremely efficient with the touches he got but you can tell that once he gets hot, he is a tough player to defend. The combination of a smooth shooting stroke and outstanding ball handling skills make him a difficult player for defenders to contain.
Lee County Freshman Guard Malachi McLean has a chance to be Special! Although he made some youthful mistakes at times, you can see the potential in this young man without a doubt. He has a high level skillset which allows him to make plays that you simply don’t see players of his age making. Offensively he didn’t get speed up too often and didn’t force too many things, which was something that really impressed us overall.
Atkins HS Senior Guard Chris Beam stepped up in the 3rd quarter! With both teams looking for offense, he was a player that would step in and provide some much need buckets for his squad. He would score almost half of his team points in the third quarter and made some defensive stops to help his team build a lead.
Final Point Stat Leaders:
Atkins HS: Yusef Suggs- 12 Points, Chris Beam- 9 Points, Avante Matthews- 7 Points
Lee County: Jarrian Hancock- 13 Points, Malachi McLean- 5 Points, JT Conwell- 5 Points
