The Westlake Chaparrals enter the 2019-2020 basketball campaign with high championship aspirations. Westlake is coming off of a 33-4 season and an appearance in the Regional Quarterfinals. Westlake’s Regional Quarterfinal game against Cibolo Steele was one of the most action-packed games of the entire UIL 6A Tournament.
The Chaparrals are accustomed to playing an ultra competitive schedule every year. Actually, Coach Robert Lucero prefers to have a strong non-district schedule to better prepare them for district play and the Texas State Tournament. In prior years, Westlake has played Wilmer-Hutchins, Guyer, and Finley Prep in non-district play. This year Westlake has early tests against Manor High School and West Memphis (Arkansas) before December.
The Chaparrals are the reigning 4 time District 25 Champs. Being a four time reigning District Champion puts a bullseye on your back, and Westlake expects to get every team’s best effort from it’s district foes. For these reasons, Westlake cannot afford to take teams lightly in order to win a 5th straight District Title.
Coach Lucero plays to his team’s strengths. He is a strong believer of Ball Movement, Unselfish Play, and a Balanced Offensive. Defensively, Westlake will play tough half court man-to-man against opposing teams. Coach Lucero feels that good man-to-man defense is necessary down the stretch in close games. Making stops on the defensive end during the 4th quarter of close games is a key component to victory.
Kevin “KJ” Adams is ranked 27th in the class of 2021 according to ESPN. KJ has college scholarship offers from at least one university from every Power 5 Conference. The 6’6 power forward has a very versatile game. He can play on the perimeter and the post. His biggest attribute is his unselfishness on the court. He does not force the action against teams that double team him. KJ is part of a growing number of Austin area basketball players that have gained National attention for their basketball talent.
Eain Mowat is a 6’0 Junior that will be running the offense at PG. Mowat has a very high basketball IQ, and he can score on all three levels. He is primed for a breakout season for Westlake and is currently drawing strong interest from Ivy League Schools and Division I Mid Major programs.
Senior Carson May battled injuries last season, but the 6’7 May is fully healthy and ready to help the Chaparrals with his shooting touch and hard-nose play on both ends of the floor.
Rory Munro is another Senior that Coach Lucero will be depending upon to serve as an ultimate “glue guy”. 6’3 Munro can do a little bit of everything on the court. Rory can play guard, wing, and power forward. He is a great passer and loves to attack the basket.
