It was put together in a different way with the younger guys mending in and sharing the court with some of our top players but was still a bit entertaining. Here are the young players that stood out.
Sam Chavez —Cherry Creek
Chavez is a player from the 2023 class that truly stood out as he played with complete control despite being one of the younger players at the event. He has a high IQ and knows where to be as well as where to find his teammates. He filled lanes correctly, got out and ran and also was able to knock down multiple shots. He is a player to watch for moving forward.
Jayson Lewis—Smoky Hill
That younger Smoky Hill class is going to be pretty good as they have so many players that can score. Lewis is a guard that plays with extreme confidence offensively and has plenty in his bag. He started one of the games out with a step-back jumper and was able to show he can score in various ways as he euro-stepped and floated basket after basket. He also makes sure to attack often which opens up the defense. Solid day for him as a guard who plays with control.
Johnathan Potts—Smoky Hill
It is unfortunate that the event ended the way that it did with Potts getting injured as he was well on his way as having one of the more impressive days for a young player. He is a strong player that knows where to be on the court and does all of the little things well that go unnoticed. He defended well, rebounded and went up for easy baskets and kept players out of the paint with boxing out and hustling. Offensively he had a few baskets as he got to the paint and finished threw contact. I hope that his surgery went well and he is back in no time as a player to watch moving forward.
Kameron Goodrich – Holy Family
Goodrich is a player that we have seen pay a few times and what you see from him is consistency. He is going to run the offense to perfection with not many mistakes. He gets others involved as he runs the pick and roll to perfection, he is patient on offense and he is a creative finisher that is comfortable with the floater. One thing that stands out about Goodrich is his high IQ. He takes what the defense gives him and that led to winning plays for his unit. Another solid showing for him.
Lamarius Royston – Smoky Hill
Royston is a player that has improved tremendously from last summer to this summer. He is playing with more confidence and thriving in the half-court as a player that is going to give his all on every single possession. Nothing comes easy when he is in the game as he is going to go after every single shot, he’s very active on the boards and setting picks and is constantly setting up on the block demanding the ball. He will be one of the bigger players that the Buffaloes have this year so it is good to see him showing signs of life offensively that were not there last summer. He will be a player that can be used in spot minutes every now and then and he will bring energy and defense to the game instantly.
