Continue ReadingThe West Coast Elite showcase came to Colorado this past weekend and brought out some of our top names as well as new players to take a look at. It was put together in a different way with the younger guys mending in and sharing the court with some of our top players but was still a bit entertaining. Here are some stock boosters who played well at the event.
Jason Simental – Thunderridge
Simental is a transfer that does plenty of things well but at this event, we got to see him in a different light as the primary ball-handler. He ran the pick and roll, finished amongst the trees and looked to score often. This was my first time seeing him in the scorer’s role where no matter what he was looking to get his. His aggressive demeanor had his group hand around despite playing with a young bunch and it also showed he can change it up if need be.
Vincas Veikalas —Overland
The more we see him the more difficult it becomes to know where we are going to rank him this upcoming season as he continues to check off more boxes. Not sure if anybody gets to the lane as easy for him and he is looking for contact so either the basket or the free-throw line. He has great size and he makes sure to use it. Players have a difficult time figuring him out as he is capable of doing it all offensively with the mindset to take over. He had a great showing.
Logan Owen – Belleview Christian
He can truly score and we see it every time that he plays. What he has shown this summer is that no matter who he is against he is going to get his. He can score against anybody, the change in pace has not stopped him from knocking down shots or pulling up for jump shots or making the right play. He does not force too much and lets the game come to him and as he continues to stand out in these showcase settings I feel as if it’ll be even easier for him when the season begins. I will go out on a limb and say he will surely be a top scorer in the state yet again.
Ben Bowen – Mountain Vista
Bowen only played in one game before sitting it down but what truly impresses me every single time he plays is how easy it is for him to take over. The game moves slower for him as he carves up the defense with finishes at the rim, jump shots or finding the open man. He is a strong, downhill runner with the ability to change paces and his size as a guard makes it even easier for him to take over. This is going to be the year for him, you can already see it with the small glimpses we have seen from him this summer and he is surely a player that schools should be all over.
Brayden Carter – Mullen
Carter is a player I was excited to see at this showcase as he will have big shoes to fill this upcoming season. He jumps into the lead big man role with the transfer out at Mullen and what he showed is he is a traditional big man that makes it difficult each time down for the opposing team. He has good size, long arms and moves very well. He patrolled the paint, altered shots and got back on defense as well. His 6’7 frame made it difficult for opposing guards and bigs to get anything easy and it was quite the day for him.
