Continue ReadingThe West Coast Elite showcase came to Colorado this past weekend and brought out some of our top names as well as new players to take a look at. It was put together in a different way with the younger guys mending in and sharing the court with some of our top players but was still a bit entertaining. Here are some big time scorers on the day.
Peyton Westfall- Pine Creek
What an offseason it has been for Westfall. If there was a theme from last year to now it has been; buckets. He has scored at will and nobody has checked him. He gets to the lane and finishes with ease, he has taken over an event with all jump-shots, he has showed that he can put it on the floor and blow by defenders and now he is putting it altogether. He is becoming a more complete player and the reason for it has been confidence. He has to be one of the more entertaining players that has been from last season until now and this is a big year for him that I feel like it comes together.
Anthony Harris Jr.—Smoky Hill
Harris is a player that when he makes his mind up to attack and score more often than not it is a basket. He gets to the rim as easy anyone that I saw this offseason and it paid off in a major way. He is electric as one of the most athletic players in the state, he finishes highlight dunks and at the showcase it was interesting to see him as the lead guard spot. He is a player that is going to have to put the ball on the floor this season and operate in a free flowing offense so the more boxes he checks off the better. Once that jump-shot starts to fall more consistently; watch out.
DeAngelo Horn – Smoky Hill
Horn is another very athletic combo-guard that gets after it. He was trying to end people’s days with dunk after dunk. He goes after the rim no matter who is around, scores in various ways and with him playing alongside one of the best centers in the entire state it was great to see him pick his spots. That is something that will translate this season. He is progressing at each event and is locked in. He fills lanes correctly, is always moving and is a springy guard with upside. Easy baskets on the day for him.
Valentinas Ulinas – Overland
One of the things that stands out about Ulinas that I rarely see from others is the willingness to go at whoever it is in front of him. He plays with a chip on his shoulder and wants to prove all doubters wrong and also he matches that intensity on the opposite end as well. He defends the best player and lets it be known that he’s there. He is a in your face defender that is going to attack you in iso or also make the right plays in pick and roll. He finishes well, has shown off his athleticism with some incredible dunks and that was all on display at the showcase. He gets it and is one of my most exciting players to watch this year. He’s rising for me and was one of the standout scorers on the day.
Joel Speckman – Chaparral
Speckman is a player that is going to be interesting to watch this upcoming year as he is going to be catapulted in the position to help alongside one of the state’s best point guards. He has the size at 6’7 to alter so many plays defensively, get on the boards as well as runs the lane and finishes. What stood out in the event was his ability to hold his own against the other top bigs. He did not back down, he backed smaller players down and scored with efficiency.
Aidan Carnevale – Legend
Carnevale was a player at the event that got whatever it was he wanted. That Legend team has the makings of being a pretty complete team and now with the size he adds it is going to be tough to beat that team. He used his 6’8 frame to dominate inside and also not allow open shots inside. He also defended well on the perimeter as a big man with good footwork. In an event that had younger players he was easily noticed as one of the bigger players at the event and he played up to that size. Solid showing for him.
