Ranging from 8th graders to some of the top seniors in the state, day one did not disappoint with a lot of high caliber players on stage. Below are a few of the players that stood out to me during the first day. Day two of the event will take place tomorrow, with games starting around nine in the morning going until noon or so.
Boston Stanton, III – 2021 – East
My favorite player of the day probably, Boston was one of the more dominate players I saw during day one at the West Coast Elite Camp. Listed at 6’4, Stanton is fun to watch on both sides of the ball. During play today, he had several steals that lead to easy fast break dunks for himself. At one point he had a steal that lead to a dunk, defensive rebounder to a transition three, and then another steal and dunk. He looked to take the defensive challenge was well, often guarding the best player on the other team. At times he was guarding, Langston Reynolds or Kendale Johnson Jr. Boston has a great sense of the game, making several nice assists to his open teammates today and is a player that can knock down the long range shot as well. Stanton will be one I keep my eye on this season, he has the chance to have a huge breakout year.
James Shiers – 2022 – Mead
James was one of the more impressive big men during day one of action. At 6’11, he has a great skill set, a fundamental big man that can stretch the floor and knock down the mid-range shot when open. Shiers has huge potential to have a breakout season during his junior year, James has good vision for a big man out of the post and does a nice job of passing out of the double team. When he gets the ball on the block, James has a variety of post moves and does a nice job of staying patient in the post. He also does a good job protecting the rim, having several block shots today, timing his jump just right. I look forward to seeing what the big man does with his last couple years in high school.
Mamadou Sow – 2021 – Lutheran
Mamadou is a player I haven’t seen much, but will definitely be following him this upcoming year. The athletic big man, listed at 6’7 made his presence felt in every game I watched this afternoon. He was hitting threes, taking it strong to the rim, a very good rebounder which lead to several coast to coast fast breaks for him with layups at the other end. I think he is in for a big junior year with a very talented Lutheran team. Baye Fall who was also at the camp, will see a lot of double teams this year which will leave opportunity for a lot of easy baskets for Sow.
Valentias Ulinas – 2020 – Overland
Valentias will be huge for Overland this year, he was doing a little bit of everything today on both ends of the court. He is a player that plays with a lot of energy which translated to some easy transition baskets for him. He attacks the rim with a force and is able to finish through defenders. Valentias might have been the only player I saw this afternoon to take a charge, which goes to show what type of player he is, he plays hard and with passion. At 6’6, with good handles, he has the ability to take his defender off the dribble as well as post his defender up.
