We start off with this week’s review with a short-handed Mae Jemison team edging out Fairfield 49-47 despite only have seven available players. The low scoring affair was a defensive battle throughout until junior Demarcus Thompson got going and closed out the Tigers in the end. Thompson ended the game with 16 points and 5 assists. Thompson has exploded on the scene out of nowhere he wasn’t on many people’s radars, but after the strong showing to the start of the season that will surely now change. The 6’2 guard is averaging 17.6 points so far early in the season and doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon. Tony Toney added 20 points in the contest and continues to show the ability to light up the scoreboard at any time. A top 25 player in the state has had some really big performances in the past and is primed and ready to have another big year in his senior campaign.
Standout Guard Brody Peebles of Hartselle has had an incredible start to the season. In a tough loss to Bob Jones during the week Peebles, however, had a great showing scoring 31 points in the narrow 68-63 loss. He is averaging a whopping 30 points per game so far in the early part of the season and is showing why he is garnering interest and offers from several SEC and mid-major schools. Peebles is showing the ability to score at all 3 levels all while getting his teammates involved from the lead guard position. He has really improved his ability to score off the dribble using a variety of high-level moves to get to his spots. His ability to shoot the ball with range makes him a tough guard for defenders that try yo pressure him on the perimeter. standing at 6’2 with a well put together body allows him the ability to handle the physical toll playing that position takes.
Lindsay Lane senior CG and Lipscomb University signee Tommy Murr continues to light the state and country on fire putting up eye-popping numbers night in and night out. In the contest vs. Oakwood Adventist Murr dropped 49 points outscoring Oakwood all by himself in a blowout 79-48. Murr who has already scored more points than any high school player ever on record in the country continues this season averaging 48 points per game so far in the early part of the season. He has always been able to shoot the ball with range (deep NBA and beyond range), but his constant work in the gym has expanded his game where is able to put the ball on the floor and beat defenders off the dribble. Expect more big number and media attention as the season continues along.
With his running mate GaQuincy McKinstry still on the gridiron looking to lead the Pinson Valley football team win back-to-back state championships 2020 PG Kam Woods is on the hardwood looking to get the Indians off on the right track to do the same in basketball. His is averaging a whopping 44.5 points per game so far this season dropping 41points last week vs Center Point in the season opener. Woods is a dynamic and crafty guard who has sneaky athletic ability. His ability to beat his defender off the dribble at any time is 2nd to none in the class. He is a streaky shooter but possesses the ability to simply put the ball in the hole. He can score it in a variety of ways but thrives in the mid-range with floaters, short pull-ups, and creative finishes. He plays at his own pace which is tough for defenders to figure out. He is able to slow you down then blow by you or speed you up then stop on a dime and knock down a shot. Not sure he can keep up this type of scoring outburst night in and night out, but with his ability, it won’t surprise us if he did.
