I made my annual start watching Fort Myers as the Green Wave traveled to Naples to take on Community School.
Final Score:
Fort Myers 71, Community School 50
Here is a look at the top performers from the outing.
Javian McCollum (Fort Myers)
As the game marched on, so did 2021 6’1″ guard Javian McCollum. He had a game-high 19 points for Fort Myers as he did his usual act from deep as a spot-up shooter. It was his dribbling, shiftiness and ability to beat defenders in 1-on-1 matchups at the point of attack that constantly stood out. He lived at the free throw line for much of the second and third quarter. McCollum simply keeps everything calm with his team and his vocalness was on full display in this opening tilt.
Da’Mani Brown (Fort Myers)
Transferring from Maryland La Plata, 2021 6’3″ guard Da’Mani Brown was a true difference maker in his debut for Fort Myers. Fresh off a football season, he came off the bench to score 15 points, pacing the leader McCollum. Brown is a long body who got going as a shooter with a pair of triples in the third quarter. His presence will make it tough for defenses to match up overall.
Lovenson Xavier & Jay Beshears (Community School)
The top two scorers and playmakers for Community School in this one were 2020 6’3″ guard Jay Beshears (Northwestern baseball commit) and 2021 6’1″ guard Lovenson Xavier. It was the junior guard, Xavier who had a team-best 15 points with eight coming in the second half. He is a quick twitched player, who handles the ball with confidence and creates for others often. Beshears was a problem in the opening half with nine of his 14 points as he kept his side afloat down 36-24 at the break. He is a very crafty attacker.
Cayden Baker & Kyle Riemenschneider (Fort Myers)
The size of the Green Wave was a clear problem for Community School and will be for a lot of Lee and Collier County programs this season. 2020 6’7″ forward Cayden Baker (North Carolina football commit) and 2020 6’5″ forward Kyle Riemenschneider were very good all night on the boards, grabbing rebounds and putting shots back. Baker had 14 points and simply was too much with his strength and height while Riemenschneider recorded seven points of his own including a 3-pointer, the game’s first points for Fort Myers.
Ryker Vance (Community School)
With just three points at the half, 2021 6’5″ forward Ryker Vance was constantly battling. He ended with 11 points, including eight in the second half alone. Vance nearly had a ridiculous one-handed slam late in the game that would have erupted the fans. He hustled defensively with five blocks that I counted. Vance can certainly learn to live another day after possessions as he continues to improve his game.
Jamin Primus (Fort Myers)
With 2020 guard Bradley Merilus (foot) still out, 2021 5’10” guard Jamin Primus drew the start for the Green Wave. His speed in transition is a real problem for defenses and he’s able to create openings for himself more often than not. He also impressed as a shooter with his opportunities. Primus finished with 10 points.
Do not leave 2021 Fort Myers guard Javian McCollum open. He will do this. He had a game high 19 points in a season opening win over Community School. @FortMyersHoops @Cp25Swfl @javian_0 pic.twitter.com/uuXfaNyN3h
