In a game that was really never close, the Cougars overwhelmed Carver with their skill, size and versatility at each position. Mt. Carmel ran away with a commanding 75-34 victory. Despite being outmatched, Carver played hard throughout the course of the game and had more than a handful of nicely executed plays.
Deon Perry takes control
Perry had his fingerprints all over this game as he finished with 26 points and five assists. The 5-foot-8 guard scored from all three levels and operated decently in ball-screen situations. Perry is extremely impressive in the open floor when he can showcase his lightning quick speed with the ball. Perry was an effective scorer around the rim and had multiple finishes despite being fouled. Perry has shown steady progression in improving his overall game and it was necessary as the Cougars lean heavily on his production this season.
Transfers fit in nicely
Mt. Carmel welcomes to impact transfers to this year’s roster in 2021 Koralp Turk and 2022 Tobi Nnadozie. Turk is a transfer from Turkey who dominated the glass throughout this game. The 6-foot-8 big man finished with a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds. Nnadozie provides a dependable wing presence who can finish well above the rim when the opportunity presents itself. The 6-foot-4 wing tallied 14 points, six assists, five steals and three rebounds to cap off a productive effort. These two, along with Perry, will be key in seeing how much this Cougars team can actually improve from last season.
Role players get set to play an important part
It’s no secret that teams will lean heavily on their star players to ultimately decide their fate. But once you have those star players in tact, it’s the role players that help you separate yourself from the pack. For this Mt. Carmel team, 2020 guard Cam Jackson and 2020 forward Kobe Edwards will play vital roles. Jackson scored 18 points in last night’s win and shot four-of-six from beyond the arc. His presence is critical for players like Perry and Nnadozie because he spaces out the floor and creates driving lanes. Edwards is a 6-foot-7 forward who will be expected to do the little things such as crash the offensive glass, disrupt shots around the rim and run the floor on both sides.
