Today, we’re taking a look at some player evaluations. These six players were able to leave their mark in different ways.
Evals:
Sam Barton (2020) | 6-4 WF | Columbus South
Barton continues to improve, being more than just a big. I used to list him as a power forward, but he does so much more. Friday he came out to the perimeter, distributed for teammates. Moved well laterally and played really well in this scrimmage. Grabbed rebounds, got put backs and even showed off his jumper.
Marcus Johnson (2020) | 6-4 WG | Columbus South
Johnson was a Swiss Army knife for South Friday. Did a little bit of everything for the Bulldogs. A secondary ball handler, dribble into mid range jumpers and knocked it down. Quick hands on defense where he forced turnovers, pushed the ball and finished at the rim. Also, the senior crashed the boards. A big time rebounder from the guard position.
Tyrese Hughey (2021) | 6-7 PF | Thomas Worthington
Friday was my first viewing of Hughey in a Thomas Worthington uniform and it did not disappoint. Did his usual work of crashing the boards, blocking shots and making it tough for his matchup to do a whole lot. Stepped out on the perimeter at times to defend and did a great job at it as he’s a versatile defender.
Tegan Myers (2022) | 6-0 PG | Logan
Myers has what it takes to be the next basketball prospect from Logan. Was impressed with how he handled himself, a smart player. The dribble drive is his go to as he got to the basket at will, finishing tough and off balance shots. Good vision even on the drive where he kicked it to open teammates on the perimeter. Doesn’t turn the ball over a ton. A sophomore that is getting better and better.
Maurice Collins (2021) | 6-3 W | Thomas Worthington
Sometimes a forgotten part of the Cardinals loaded junior class by many, but shouldn’t be. Collins brings it on both ends and that’s exactly what he did Friday. Maurice defended well, got to the hoop with ease and was tough to guard at times. Showed the ability to lead the transition or receive a late pass for a bucket. Big on the boards from the three spot, on both ends. Collins will have plenty of opportunity with the Cardinals this winter.
TaQuan Simington (2020) | 6-2 G | Columbus South
Simington operated off ball and on ball a ton. Knocked down the baseline pull up, got to the hoop and finished strong, all his usual offensive antics. On the defensive end the senior was able to bring the dog mentality he normally does. Blocking shots, jumping passing lanes and forcing turnovers. Dangerous in transition where he set up his teammate and finished it as well.
