Wayne Country Day School off to a hot start
Wayne Country Day School is off to a solid start led by a number of solid prospects on their roster. Head coach Keith McLawhorn has the Chargers off to a 7-0 start led by the balance of 2020 forward Linwood Grandy, 2021s Jaden Cooper and Carlos Raven and 2022 guard Mike Best Jr.. Those are just a few of the names that have stood out for Wayne Country Day in the early going. 2021 forward Vonte Hutcherson and Julian Williams have also made some noise in the frontcourt.
Grandy is putting up 9.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game but a lot of what he does doesn’t show up on the stat sheet, like his ability to dive on the floor for loose balls and alter shots in the paint with his 6-foot-5 frame. Cooper, Raven and Best have formed quite the backcourt with their abilities to all play on or off the ball. As a group, they’re averaging 7.0 assists per game this season so far.
Durham Academy continues to impress
The Durham Academy Cavaliers got a solid win over Voyager Academy, 67-50, behind 22 points and six rebounds from 2022 guard M.J. Rice. The result gave Voyager Academy their first loss of the season
The victory puts the Cavaliers at 7-0 on the season with marquee wins over Greensboro Day and Wesleyan Christian as well. Durham Academy also got 15 points and six rebounds from junior Cole Sinclair while sophomore Nik Graves posted 13 points, six rebounds, and six assists.
Millbrook looks like the best team in 4A (So far.)
One team that’s firing on all cylinders and hasn’t missed a beat yet this season are the Millbrook Wildcats. The Wildcats are 4-0 after an 81-51 victory over the Wakefield Wolverines on Wednesday night. That victory comes after they defeated the Green Hope Falcons, 74-26, while holding them to 30 percent shooting on Monday night. On Tuesday night, all five starters scored in double figures as they ran away with yet another game. They’ve got some marquee games on their schedule coming up, be sure you get eyes on them.
As a unit, Millbrook looks better than ever and they’re still without starting point guard Nolan Dorsey, which makes their start even more intriguing. It’ll be interesting to see how things go this season for them. If they aren’t a favorite for the 4A State title when the tournament arrives, I’d be surprised.
2021 forward Will Felton has been a double-double nightmare, averaging 20.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. Behind him, there’s 2020 forward Jalen McCoy, averaging 11.0 points per game. 2021 forward Eric van der Heijden is averaging 10.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. 2020 wing Sam Hood is putting up 10.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest. They’re off to a productive start so far and look like one of the top teams in 4A.
Top Performances
2021 guard Terence Harcum Jr. opened the season with 38 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and four assists for the Granville Central Panthers as they got off to a 1-0 start with a 72-49 win over Roxboro Community. Harcum has drawn some interest from East Carolina and others of late. He should draw some serious buzz this season.
2021 shooting guard Brady Rankin put up 24 points on eight made 3-pointers in Hoggard’s second victory of the season. He’s made 12 3-pointers for his squad through the first two games and they’re currently 2-0 on the young season. He’s a sharpshooter that colleges will want to track.
2021 Louisburg guard Elijah Jamison opened the season with 41 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists against Falls Lake Academy in a victory. He holds offers from Ole Miss, James Madison and Elon already and is off to quite the start to the 2019-20 season.
Dudley senior wing Jeremiah Dickerson is off to quite the start as well as one of those do-it-all prospects. He posted 10 points, six rebounds, a block and had a huge dunk against Hillside in a victory. Dickerson holds offers from a good number of D2 and D3 schools.
