Conference Commentary
State Title Contender: CDH, East Ridge
The Raiders lose one starter but replace that starter with J’Vonne Hadley who gives the team more versatility because of his size. CDH has the pieces to make a run, they just have to be able to defend quality size. There are different types of players on the Raider roster with size which will allow them to throw 20 fouls at a guy. One of those guys is East Ridge big Ben Carlson. Ben is the lone returning starter for the Raptors although East Ridge has a lot of quality players coming up through their system.
Compete with Most: Woodbury, Mounds View, Roseville
Woodbury only won six games last year but a lot of good young players earned time which should get them to being at least .500 this season. The Royals have two double figure players returning, other experience back and maybe a key transfer. My gut feeling is that this will be a really nice year for the Mustangs. They have a lot of solid growing pieces including Dylan Wheeler. The Raiders from Roseville should improve on their ten wins with so many guys making up a big senior class.
Rebuilding: White Bear Lake, Forest Lake, Irondale, Park, Stillwater
WBL losses most of their senior production. They aren’t rebuilding in the sense that they have to build up talent, it’s more that a bunch of new players are going to be in the rotation. Forest Lake lost all of their double figure scorers including Dorell Young who is no longer at the school. There are several reserve players ready to step into bigger spots. Irondale has had some really good players and they will again this year with Iggy Ejifor but they can never seem to get over the hump. The Park Wolfpack had some good players last year leading to a solid season but losing so much means rebuilding experience. Stillwater went 12-15 but lost most of their rotation. It will likely be a step back season but there is talent coming up through the younger levels.
