The Ironwood Eagles made it very far last season, much farther than many thought they would go. While the team has lost a huge piece of their overall team success in Cassius Carmichael (Glendale Community College), the Eagles have had 3 big time transfers in David Teibo (Centennial), Jaden Glass (Agua Fria), and Trent Hudgens (Moon Valley).
While the trio has to sit out the front half of the season, they will be back just in time for region play and Ironwood will love having them back as their region is one of the toughest in the state. I think this team has real potential to go far this season. They are bringing back some huge pieces in Dominic Gonzalez, JJ White, and Bailon Black, to pair with their trio of transfers.
With the returners and newbies, Ironwood has to be one of the deepest teams in the entire state. Last year, their main issue was that they were too small to match up against Sunnyslope and Millennium (that was the word around town). However, despite their lack of size…Ironwood swept Sunnyslope and lost to Millennium by 1 point in the state playoffs. I am definitely looking forward to seeing what they can do with this team as they have gotten so much deeper and most importantly, they have gotten a lot bigger.
Key Returners:
Dominic Gonzalez 6’3 2020 G 15.9 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 2.6 APG, 1.4 SPG
Dominic is one of the best scorers in the state. He can get it done from everywhere on the court. Gonzalez is also very smart and solid on defense.
JJ White 6’3 2021 G 10.1 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 2.1 APG, 2.5 SPG
JJ White is the prototypical 3 and D player. He will likely match up against other team’s top scorer and will likely shut them down or at least slow them down.
Bailon Black 6’4 2021 G 11.9 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 3.9 RPG, 1.5 SPG
Bailon Black is their returning starting PG. He is very smart and is a gifted passer. Black is also a very talented shooter with range.
Key Additions:
Trent Hudgens 6’0 2020 G 17.2 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 5.4 APG, 4.2 SPG
Hudgens is one of the best guards in the 2020 class and can do a little bit of everything. This freak athlete can shoot it, score off the drive, facilitate, and play D.
David Teibo 6’4 2020 F 9.1 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 1.5 SPG
Teibo is a physical player who loves to get on the board and battle down low. I think he brings some toughness to Ironwood’s post defense.
Jaden Glass 6’6 2020 F 9.4 PPG, 5.6 RPG
Glass is a ridiculous athlete who will allow Ironwood to match up nicely against other bigs, while still allowing Ironwood to play as fast as they do.
Wild Cards
Steinar Christianson 6’5 2021 F
Christianson has gotten a lot bigger and stronger. He may be serviceable to Ironwood whenever their bigs need a break. If Steinar can come in and give them valuable minutes, it will be more than welcome.
Ringo Aguek 6’6 2022 G/F
Rumor has it that Ringo Aguek has grown to 6’6 and I don’t doubt it. The kid could be in for a huge season as it looks like he is finally growing into his body. Ringo provides Ironwood with a lot of size coming off their bench.
