More than anything though, this game was about getting experience and seeing what needs to be worked on before the season tips-off
The beauty of a scrimmage game is that it has qualities of a real game, and when you’re a real ballplayer you leave it all on the court no matter if the game goes on your record or not.
So let’s look at some players that impressed me on the hardwood.
Dominic Owens, 2020, 6’1 guard plays with heart. He’s one of those players that always at the right place at the right time. His quick and flashy style of play makes him fun to watch. Owen’s ability to handle the ball allows him to maneuver through the defense and create shots you didn’t know were possible. He has a beautiful floater, it looks effortless and sometimes it appears just out of thin air. What I admired most about him were his ambition and hustle. He gives every possession his full effort. What is he looking forward to this season? “I want to prove everybody wrong and go to state,” said Owens.
Cam McDowell, 2021, 6’5 combo guard is a shooter. No really, he can shoot the lights out. McDowell is confident when he steps up to the three-point line and he has every reason to be. He dominated beyond the arc. Did I mention he’s a lefty? He’s a special player that has the ability to be a leader on the hardwood. The most enjoyable aspect of his game was his energy and intensity. I would often catch him hyping up his teammates and boosting the team morale. He knows that his team is on the radar and he’s ready to give people something to talk about. “I’m looking forward to getting better as a team, repeating a season similar to last year and going 32-0,” said McDowell.
Jonathan Moliere, 2020, 6’5 wing player is a force to be reckoned with. The way he contributes in the post cannot be ignored. He alters shots when he’s down low, making defenders think twice about attacking the rim. Moiere had block, after block, after block. In addition, his rebounding ability on both ends of the floor was quite impressive. Many of his rebounds were dished off for fastbreaks that led to quick and easy buckets. When I asked the senior what he’s looking forward to his last season of high school he said one word, “State.”
