With all of these teams being public school squads and quite a few having this as their first taste of outside competition since the summer, we are looking forward to see how things go for these squads. Let’s take a look at a few of the teams that will be in the building and some of the players that they feature.
The new backcourt of Washington HS will be on display featuring 2020 Guard Rashod Smith and 2021 Omarion Blount. Both of these young men know how to score the ball at a high level but also can make plays without the ball in their hands and have the tools to be solid defenders.
Richmond County (2018-2019 Record 17-12): They have a nice amount of talent up and down the roster and have been putting in a nice amount of work over the last few months. One player in particular that has already begun to turn heads is 6’5 Junior Forward Nygie Stroman who has picked up some D1 interest.
South Central (2018-2019 Record 30-1): Any time you lose an ACC commit and two scholarship level guards at the D1 and D2 level, you will have to look to rebuild somewhat. However don’t count this squad out before the season starts, they have some nice pieces to their roster and should only get better as the year goes on.
71st HS (2018-2019 Record 26-4): Veteran guard play has been something that the Falcons have depended on over the years for success but this year will be different as they are a much younger squad with a lot of size. One player to keep an eye on for the future is 2023 Forward Derrick Green who played with CP3 during AAU ball, he’s got the size and potential to be a very special forward/center prospect before it’s all said and done.
Southern Lee (2018-2019 Record 25-4): The host team will have a bit of a different look as they have lost seven players from the squad last year which includes leading scorers to transfer and graduation. They will be younger but that should only help them as they look to rebuild for the future and improve each season, don’t expect too much early on but they will surely be competitive.
Broughton (2018-2019 Record 19-10): Another team that lost their starting backcourt and a good amount of scoring due to graduation, but one thing we know about this squad is that they will always be a competitive group. Don’t be surprised to see a new freshman or transfer emerge for this group and have a major impact, or even a player from last season to have an increased role.
