With the same criteria, it would only be fair to look at the players that I think constitute the All-South Louisiana team. Just as the previous team, these players are some of the best of the best Louisiana has to offer.
All-South Louisiana 1st Team
G – Reece Beekman Reece Beekman 6'2" | SG Scotlandville | 2020 State #45 Nation LA / 6’3″ / Scotlandville Magnet / 2020
G – Jalen Cook Jalen Cook 6'0" | PG Walker | 2020 State #98 Nation LA / 6’0″ / Walker / 2020
W – Hobert Grayson / 6’5″ / East Ascension / 2020
F – Collin Holloway Collin Holloway 6'6" | SF Port Allen | 2020 State LA / 6’5″ / Port Allen / 2020
P – Joe Charles / 6’8″ / Carencro / 2021
The first two names on this team are no-brainers. Beekman is the best distributor in Louisiana. No other guard can get others involved in a game like him. Cook is a force of nature. He puts up big numbers when the competition, and the lights, are the brightest (ask Ouachita). Charles is as versatile as they can get on offense but defends the rim like a post player. He can operate inside the paint and on the perimeter. Holloway is an offensive mismatch for most teams. He can post smaller forwards and take bigger ones off the dribble. Grayson can do it all. If you need him to rebound, run the point, or defend the best player, he will do all of that. He can also score at all three levels with the best of them. A true all-around player.
All-South Louisiana 2nd Team
G – Kentrell Garnett Kentrell Garnett 6'1" | SG Catholic | 2020 State LA / 6’2″ / Catholic High / 2020
G – Taireon Joseph / 6’2″ / Scotlandville Magnet / 2020
W – Elijah Tate Elijah Tate 6'3" | SF Madison Prep | 2020 State LA / 6’3″ / Madison Prep / 2020
F – Derrick Tezeno Derrick Tezeno 6'5" | SF North Central | 2021 State LA / 6’4″ / North Central / 2021
P – Jordan Johnson Jordan Johnson 6'7" | PF Madison Prep | 2020 State LA / 6’7″ / Madison Prep / 2020
The second team are full of guys who can fill it up on offense but can get down and defend when needed. Garnett is a two level scorer who can fill it up from deep. He can also get to the rim with the best guards in the state. “Scootah” Joseph is the same as Garnett from deep. However, he will dunk on another players head without hesitation. Tate is one of the best defenders in the state at the wing/guard position. He can make the night a living nightmare for players opposite of him. Johnson is the prototypical athletic post. He is probably the best rebounding and rim-running big in Louisiana. Tezeno is a potential Player of the Year. Inside and outside game is exceptional with a high motor to rebound. He is as good as they come.
All-South Louisiana 3rd Team
G – Byron Joshua Byron Joshua 5'10" | PG Crescent City | 2020 State LA / 5’10” / Crescent City / 2020
G – Michael Thomas Michael Thomas 6'0" | PG Hamilton Christian | 2020 State #400 Nation LA / 6’1″ / Hamilton Christian / 2020
W – Carlos Stewart / 6’0″ / Dunham / 2021
F – Brian Thomas / 6’4″ / Walker / 2021
P – Corey Dunning Corey Dunning 6'7" | C Lafayette | 2020 State LA / 6’7″ / Lafayette / 2020
The third team has some of the most versatile players located in the state. Joshua is the best point guard under 6’0″. Along with being a top notch point guard, he can score the ball from inside or outside with the best. Thomas can play either the point or the off guard. He is very effective at both. Thomas also plays big in big moments. Carlos Stewart is a two-way player who is best known for his shooting ability. He has improved his ability to drive which will make him more deadly on the offensive end. Thomas is a freakish athlete who can out jump practically everyone. Even though he is an elite receiver, he can also get his team 20 and 10 on any given night. Dunning is a hard worker around the basket rebounding and scoring. He can also face up which makes him even more dangerous.
Of course there are other big time players throughout south Louisiana. Players like Tawasky Johnson Tawasky Johnson 6'0" | PG Port Allen | 2021 State LA (5’11”, 2022, Port Allen), Deandre Hypolite (6’3″, 2020, Breaux Bridge), and Jaden Shelvin Jaden Shelvin 6'2" | CG St. Thomas More | 2021 State LA (6’2″, 2021, St. Thomas More) are prime time players who can take over games on any night. However, we will see how the above players, and others, perform beginning on next Tuesday.
