Continue ReadingSaturday was a busy day across north Louisiana off Interstate 20. There was the Battle of the Hardwood girls tournament at Bossier High, the Wossman Hall of Fame Classic, and the finals of the Don Stahl tournament at Lakeside. All classes were represented at these events with excellent performances in each one. We will take a look at players who stood out from Saturday.
Player of the Day
Jordan Fuller / 6’1″ / Doyline / 2020 (photo cred: JJ Marshall)
Fuller was a member of the Don Stahl all tournament team and he saved his best performance for Saturday night. In the championship game, his three, first half three pointers staked the Panthers to and early lead. Then, his ability to deflect passes and recover to shooters made it hard for Lakeside shooters to get clean looks. His tenacious defense led to turnovers and run outs over and over again by the Panthers. He also had several skip pass assist that found open shooters. Fuller ended up with a game high 21 points as the Doyline won the tournament title.
Other Standout Players
Javion Richard / 6’2″ / West Monroe / 2021
There are point guards aplenty in the classes 2020-2022. It appears that West Monroe has a good one in Javion Richard. During the Rebels Hall of Fame game loss to Carroll, Richard displayed the traits of an exceptional floor leader. Richard is a long armed guard who has the height and to see over smaller guards and handle to manuever around them. On Saturday, he found several teammates by using his height to his advantage. His game is fluid in all ways that are important. He has a solid jumper to go along with his ballhandling. Richard is a stud in the making and will definitely make West Monroe a team to watch in 5A.
Justin Wilson / 6’4″ / Richwood / 2021
Undersized post seem to have to ability to score or create fouls at will. Richwood forward Justin Wilson falls in this category. His offensive game is not pretty but it is effective. On two or three possessions in their blowout win over Ruston, Wilson scored by simply backing the defender down and using his strength to score. Wilson creates room with his wide body and scores with his great post footwork. He reminds me some of Richwood’s own Reginal “Monsta” Johnson with his ability to score in the paint. One thing is for sure, Wilson is good at scoring and rebounding in the paint. He is a definite threat to score when he gets the ball.
Keagan Moncrief Keagan Moncrief 6'5" | SF West Monroe | 2021 State LA / 6’4″ / West Monroe / 2021
Moncrief is the athletic post player for the West Monroe Rebels. He runs the floor like a small wing and rebounds like a tall power forward. What is probably his best attribute is his ability to rebound and score in traffic. He has soft hands to catch the rebound and powers up and through traffic. Against the Twin Towers of Carroll, Moncrief was able to carve out space and rebound or finish. He had one finish where he caught the ball on the left side of the goal, spun to miss a defender, and finish on the right. Moncrief can handle his own in around the basket. He will be a big asset to the Rebel attack this season.
Lamar McKinsey / 6’4″ / Lakside / 2020
McKinsey was the Warriors best player during the championship versus Doyline. He led the team with 13 points before fouling out. McKinsey is an athletic wing who can get his own shot. Because of his athleticism, his shot is rarely effected. McKinsey can get clean jumpers when he wants. He also has the ability to finish through contact. Part of that is attributed to his play as a wideout. On the defensive end, he is active in passing lanes and creates plenty of disruption. McKinsey is a player who will be key to Lakeside making any noise in class 2A.
Tournament season continues this week with tournaments at Lakeview, Booker T. Washington (Shreveport), and Natchitoches Central. Prep Hoops will be there to highlight other players at the various tournaments going on during Thanksgiving week.
