Watching each team multiple times, we came away impressed with multiple players. Scrimmages give us a good feel of what teams and players will look like for the season to come. We can see early improvements, how players have changed and what to expect. Let’s dive on in!
Prospects:
Nate Griggs (2020) | 5-11 PG | Delaware Hayes
Griggs has noticeably added some strength since last season. Always a tough guard but finished consistently through the paint at the hoop. Made good choice in transition, including setting teammates up for sure looks at the rim. Knocked down jumpers off the dribble with a quick crossover and step back.
Ethan Bell (2021) | 5-9 PG | River Valley
A rough start didn’t last for long for Bell. Was the best pure point guard on display today and used the whole court at all times making the defense work. If a teammate is open, he found them. Displayed good court vision at all times, as he doesn’t let his height affect his game. Created his own shot off the bounce, often having defenders leaning after the step back. The junior is definitely a prospect.
Dylan Johnson (2021) | 6-3 WG | River Valley
Dylan Johnson looks like he could be a primary scorer for the Vikings this winter. Created his own shot off the dribble in multiple ways, a nice rise up in the mid range. Operated with quick hands in the defensive side, poked balls loose and finished in transition. Athlete.
Josh Potter (2021) | 5-11 G | Johnstown
Potter was a name I wasn’t very familiar with, but will definitely be a peace for the Johnnies. Works well off the ball, cutting to the basket with poise. Finished through contact at the rim with defenders draped on him. Tough guard on both ends at times.
Paul Burris (2020) | 6-6 PF | Delaware Hayes
Burris seems to be stepping inside more because of team needs now. Still the same floor stretching ability. Gets open threes off of flare screens and by filling the lane in transition. Worked well off the bounce including a mid range floater that looked money. Lengthy rebounder that grabbed many boards. The Ashland commit was solid today.
Jake Lusk (2021) | 6-3 WF | Johnstown
Lusk was the strongest player on the floor. Physically imposing, brings a football body to the hardwood. Bullied defenders for extra possessions, received put back buckets and was a brick wall inside on the defensive end. Should be a big time player for the Johnnies this winter.
Jahki Henderson (2021) | 6-5 PF | River Valley
I watched Henderson for the first time since he moved to RV and it didn’t disappoint. Wasn’t big on the offensive end but definitely affected the game in other areas. Crashed the boards and boxed out his man nearly every trip. The big man even pushed the ball down the court for an assist on the fast break one trip. Brings active hands on D with long arms, forces turnovers. Could be the defensive game changer the Vikings needed. Keeping his motor going is key.
