The three-day event culminated Saturday with an 8 p.m. match-up between the No. 1 team in the state, Sierra Canyon, and the No. 1 team in San Diego, Cathedral Catholic.
While there were plenty of high level efforts in the marquee game, there were some even better ones in the four games leading up to it. Here’s a breakdown of those performances.
Chibuzo Agbo, St. Augustine
Agbo went off for 40 points and 17 rebounds in only three quarters. The 6-foot-7 wing, who is headed to Texas Tech, scored in every way imaginable in the Saints’ 84-65 win over Montgomery. He powered through smaller defenders in the paint, cleaned up the offensive glass for put-backs and connected on catch-and-shoot 3-pointers.
St. Augustine forward Chibuzo Agbo scored 40 points and pulled down 17 rebounds in a win over Montgomery Saturday at the San Diego Tip-Off Challenge.Mikey Williams, San Ysidro
Fans showed up early and en masse to catch a glimpse of the freshman sensation and he didn’t disappoint. The 6-foot-2 shooting guard scored 50 points with eight 3-pointers in front of a sold-out crowd. Williams is as gifted a scorer as you’ll find and his deep ball off the catch is becoming more consistent. Williams could have neared the 60-point plateau, but went just 6-for-14 from the free throw line.
Shy Odom, Sierra Canyon
Odom doesn’t get the same hype as his bigger name teammates do, but he doesn’t care and that’s what makes him the perfect fit for this Trailblazers squad. Sierra Canyon needed a spark to put away Cathedral Catholic and the 6-foot-6 forward was the one to do it. Odom scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds in the third quarter alone and paced the Trailblazers with 20 and 10 overall in a 13-point win over the Dons.
Angelo Gil, Mission Bay
Gil was overshadowed by another freshman who happened to score 50 points, but we figured we could give him some recognition here. The 6-foot Mission Bay freshman point guard scored an efficient 20 points in the loss to San Ysidro. Gil stood out due to his under control pace, ability to navigate defenses and inside-out scoring ability.
A.J. Burgin, San Diego
Burgin didn’t have his best shooting stuff Saturday, but anyone who follows high school hoops knows he can stroke it and even the best of shooters have off games. Burgin made this list because of everything else he did to help his team tough out a gritty win. The Cavers battled foul trouble that saw two starters sidelined with five fouls and led to them giving up a 14-point third quarter lead to Eastlake. Burgin steadied the ship down the stretch to help San Diego eek out a two-point victory. The junior guard finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Keishon Trice and Maurice Holmes, Helix
Sweetwater had absolutely no answer for Trice and Holmes as the duo combined for 42 points (Trice 23, Holmes 19) in the blowout victory. Trice is a physical and athletic specimen who powered his way to the basket and finished everything at the rim. Holmes, a Fresno-Pacific commit, added 10 rebounds to his 19 points and knocked down a handful of perimeter jumpers.
