The 6’5″ Garrett played more of a supporting role to graduated leading scorer Isaiah Ervin for the Hawks 16-13 team that won a district championship last season. During the off-season, Garrett has gotten bigger and stronger and has become a confident bucket-getter, whether he’s attacking the basket or creating jumpers from 3-point range. With his height, it adds to his offensive advantages.
“I’ve improved on being more aggressive,” he said. “I’ve always tried to play the right way and everyone around me says I’m best when I’m in attack mode. The best thing about being a big guard is that everything is a mismatch. There’s really no way for anyone to guard you. If they put a big on you, they won’t be skilled enough to contain you and if put a little guard on you, it turns into bully ball.”
Garrett gained a lot of confidence during the summer grassroots season, where he played with the Southwest Illinois Jets 17U team in the Recruit Looks League. Garrett emerged as one of the top guards on the circuit as he was able to showcase all of his offensive talents. He also earned a scholarship offer from SIU-Edwardsville and interest from several other Division I and II schools.
“The Jets have been a big part of my development as a player and as a man,” he said. “They were one of the few organizations that recruited me to play for them and right out of the gate, they trusted me to help lead their 17U team the right way to I owe coach Andre (McMurray) and the rest of the Jets organization big time.”
Garrett returns for his senior season to lead a talented Hawks team that will be one of the top teams to watch in Class 5. The Hawks advanced to the Class 5 state sectionals last season.
“My goals for me senior season is to make all-conference, get more colleges calling and to lead my brothers to a state championship,” he said. “We have been grinding since we were eliminated last season and it will be all worth it when we hold that state title up at the end of the season.”
