Prospect Spotlight: Montell Cooper (2020)
Montell Cooper, a class of 2020 guard from Good Counsel, appears set for a breakout senior season. The 6-foot-1 lefty played well during his team’s recent scrimmage at Sidwell Friends. Cooper recently spoke with Prep Hoops about the development of his overall game among other topics.
PH: Could you describe your playing background before this season?
MC: “I played JV my first 2 years at Good Counsel. Didn’t play as much last year on varsity. But this summer I really took it seriously and started training so I could get the playing time that I wanted.”
PH: For those who haven’t seen you play how would you describe your game?
MC: I’d say I’m a long slashing mid-range guard that can do it all. Whatever the coach wants.
PH: It seems like you’re comfortable using your right hand to finish around the basket. Can you explain the importance of being able to use both hands?
MC: “In my younger days I didn’t use my right hand, but I started working on it as I got to high school. I knew I would need both hands, so I started developing that early.”
PH: What part of your overall game are you working on now?
MC: “My shot off the dribble. Specifically shooting threes off the dribble.”
PH: What do you think your role for this team will be?
MC: “I’m an X-Factor on the team. If I have a bad game, it could go bad for the team. If I have a good game, we can play well.”
PH: Who is currently recruiting you?
MC: “I have D2 and D3 interest. Bowie State, Millersville, Marymount, McDaniel, Washington College, Goucher, and Hood College. I’ve visited Marymount, Goucher and Washington College so far.”
PH: What are your goals?
MC: “In the short-term, to keep my role on the team, keep playing well, and keep doing my thing. Long-term, to play D1 basketball. My intermediate goal is to make it to American with my team.”
