Prospect Spotlight: Ed Johnson III (2021)
Ed Johnson III, a class of 2021 guard from Bishop McNamara, is heading into his junior year with some positive momentum. The left-hander, who transferred from Pallotti, led the Mustangs in scoring and three-point shooting during the Capitol Hoops Summer League. Johnson hit a team-high 21 threes in 10 games on 38% shooting from behind the arc.
“I have to stay focused on winning,” Johnson told Prep Hoops. “Just keeping the main thing, the main thing. Not staying off track. Just keep being consistent.”
A combo guard who can shoot well from the catch or off the dribble, the next areas of improvement for Johnson will be to improve his right hand, finish better through contact, and find ways to consistently make guys around him better. He will be asked to score and lead the team, but he understands that getting his teammates going will also be important.
“My teammates Aaron (Russell) and Dave (Brown) can contribute too,” he stated.
As a southpaw, it’s only right that Johnson idolizes James Harden, arguably the most prolific lefty that the league has seen. Ball-handling is one of the most underrated aspects of Harden’s game, and Johnson believes they have that in common.
“I’m a good dribbler,” Johnson stated. “I also talk a lot on the court. I’m a very hype guy.”
It remains to be seen exactly what Johnson’s role will be in a talented Mustangs backcourt, but all signs point to a significant one. It will be interesting to see what he can do with the momentum he created during the summer.
