While constructing our previews this year, we decided to do a couple All Met Teams for different areas, now looking at the Hampton Roads area. We’ll be doing a first and second team, with eight guys on each team. Here’s a look at our preseason predictions for the All Met Hampton Roads Second Team.
*Note: All Met selections are based on predicted production and impact at the high school level, not necessarily the best collegiate prospects in the area.
Chaunce Jenkins | 6’3” WG | Menchville 2020
If he wasn’t on a stacked team including junior Allen Strothers (below), Jenkins would likely be a choice for our first team, as would Strothers. However, that doesn’t diminish the fact that Jenkins has become one of the most improved players in the area over the past year and he’s become a legit division one prospect with his blend of size and skill set on the wing. He can shoot the rock from deep, he’s a good athlete with a good motor and he can make plays outside of scoring that include rebounding and defending as well. He’s set to have a huge senior year and will be one of the best wings in the 757 this year.
Allen Strothers | 6’2” PG | Menchville 2021
An athletic, playmaking point guard who makes an impact on both ends of the floor, Strothers is one of the top guards in the area and has been receiving college offers for over two years now. He’s a true point guard who can handle pressure and get in the lane to make plays for others, and he’s an athletic finisher with good hang time who can play above the rim and finish through contact as well. While he’s a streaky shooter from deep he does possess a good pull-up and makes shots in clutch situations, and he’s also a good defender who sets the tone on both ends as well.
Christian Moore | 5’11” PG | Cape Henry 2021
One of the main reasons for the Cape Henry resurgence on a team that should be a dark horse in the VISAA D1 classification, Moore is a natural scorer at the point guard position with good feel and shotmaking ability. He’s smooth off the bounce as a guy who can run the pick-and-roll and get to his spots, he can create his own shot off the bounce and has deep range from behind the arc. He’s a very consistent shooter who can fill it up quickly and makes the right play much more often than he doesn’t.
Dominic Stanford | 6’4” WG | Kempsville 2021
My pick for the breakout player in the Hampton Roads area this year, Stanford has all of the tools to be a go-to scorer and fill it up with his blend of size, athleticism and skill set he has. At 6’4” he can play way above the rim, he rebounds well for a wing and he’s able to play on and off the basketball where he can make shots from all three levels and get downhill and finish through traffic. He’s part of a Kempsville team that is young but talented and should be a surprise contender in the area, especially if Stanford has the year we’re expecting him to.
James Prescott | 6’0” PG | Woodrow Wilson 2021
One of the most under the radar lead guards in the state, Prescott has continued to improve and impress in his time at Wilson and is a major reason many believe they’re a dark horse candidate this year. He’s a stocky and strong guard who knows how to get his spots, makes the right play on a regular basis and is a competitor who makes winning plays on the regular. He makes everyone on his team better while also being a three level scoring threat, and the way he’s trending he looks like he could be a division one guard when it’s all said and done.
Kanye Clary | 5’10” PG | Princess Anne 2022
One of the most dynamic young guards in the 757, Clary is a guy who could easily be First Team if he can lead PA to a winning record and possible playoff run. He’s a do everything kind of guard that sets the on both ends of the floor and makes everyone on his team better. He has tremendous feel off the bounce, he’s able to change pace and get in the lane, he’s a natural scorer from all three levels and he’s got a competitive streak you just can’t teach. It’s going to be a lot of fun to watch him grow moving forward.
Efrem Johnson | 6’3” WG | Western Branch 2022
Another guy who could be first team from the numbers he’ll likely put up, Johnson is taking over a Western Branch group that lost a lot of their firepower from last year and he’ll have the green light this year. At 6’3” he’s a natural scorer from the guard position who can play on and off the basketball, he scores in bunches from deep and in the midrange and he’s an athletic and strong finisher through contact. He’s likely going to be one of the top scorers in the area and will do a little of everything for them outside of that as well.
DJ Hand | 6’3” PG | Landstown 2022
Hand started and played a key role on last year’s state championship team, but now that he’s a sophomore he’s going to have the ball in his hands and be the main playmaker with them as well. The lead guard has grown to about 6’3”, he’s already highly skilled with good feel and with the talented pieces around him he should be able to showcase his ability to run a team and have them in contention to make another deep run this year. He has a number of other guys that will have a chance to be on this list but Hand’s ability to run the team and make others better while being a scoring threat gives him the edge in my opinion.
