Greetings from Austin,
As we start another year of high school hoops, Prep Hoops has arrived in Austin, Texas. Not only is Austin one of the best cities to live in America, Austin also is the home of talented players, exceptional coaches, and proud traditions.
Over time, Prep Hoops will attend many games, tournaments, practices, as well as write features on various student-athletes, coaches, schools, and communities.
With that being said, Prep Hoops introduces it’s 1st Annual Prep Hoops Austin, Texas Tour.
Prep Hoops visited 7 high schools in Austin to interview the coaches and observe practices.
1st Stop on the Prep Hoops Texas Tour………
Our first stop on the Prep Hoops Austin Tour takes us to James Bowie High School, Home of the Bulldogs. Bowie is coming off of a strong 2018-2019 campaign making it all the way to the 6A Regional Semifinals.
This season Coach Celester Collier expects great things from his team. If you have ever seen a Coach Collier team in person you know that you’re going to see three things.
1.) Hard working in both ends of the floor
2.) Defensive Minded
3.) Will play “Uptempo” whenever possible
The 2019-2020 Bulldogs are going to bring these assets to the court along with the luxury of having a veteran-laden team. Bowie has three returning starters, and several returners from last year’s team. Many of the players on Bowie’s team have interest and/or offers from various colleges and universities.
Coleton Benson is a “Bucket”. If you have not heard off Coleton, please allow me to give you a small sample of his ever growing “Basketball Bio”.
*2nd Team All Central Texas
*All District (6A District 25)
*42% from 3 point range
Here’s the scary part, he accomplished these feats as a Sophomore. That’s right, Coleton is only a Junior with an unbelievable skill set. There’s no wonder several Division I schools
are in constant contact with Coleton.
Ryan McIntyre is a Senior who has “Committed” to Texas A&M Commerce to play basketball next season. For the present, Ryan’s mindset is on bringing a Texas State Championship to Bowie. Ryan is a Combo Guard that is a great shooter and can attack the basket aggressively with either hand. Ryan McIntyre is what I call a great example of a “Student-Athlete”.
Ethan Walker is a 6-6 Senior who can play both wing positions and the 4. Ethan has a nice touch from the perimeter which makes him a match up problem for teams that go with a smaller lineup or play zone because of his ability to drain the 3. Ethan as offers from Southwestern, Texas Lutheran, and Hampden-Sydney.
Drew Dunsmore will be anchoring the post for the Bulldogs. Drew is a strong post player and an aggressive rebounder on both ends of the court. He can truly be a nightmare to opposing teams in the paint. Drew is excellent at sealing his defender to receive post entry passes. Drew has also received an offer from Texas Lutheran University.
Cy Young and Tyler Deithloff will bring valuable Senior Leadership and added experience for the Bulldogs. Both players will be needed in order for Bowie to accomplish their goal of winning a Texas State 6A Championship.
